The animatronics aren't evil, they're just possessed by the vengeful spirits of children who were murdered at this very pizzeria, and want revenge on their murderer, who also just so happened to work as a security guard at that very restaurant.
I'm not even really joking here. That's the actual hidden lore behind this game's story.

I believe the Phone Guy mentions that if you try that, there's a chance they'll think you're an empty costume and try to stuff an endoskeleton in you.
If you're dressed like an animal and moving when they see you, however, then yeah, I imagine you'd be safe.
