Not sure what the original sculpt was done in, but my version of the prototype is Magic Sculp on a resin copy base.

I'm not averse to it, in fact I'd really like to! But because I do a lot of the small detailing by hand (and at this level, while it can be impressive, it takes VERY long; you can see just the edits I did took me three months so far and I'm definitely not done), what I'd have to charge to sculpt at this level would be far beyond what most furries would be willing to pay for sculpture work. Plus, I'm really not as jazzed about painting as sculpting (and most folks would want painted figures)...I can do it, but I'd rather be spending more time getting the next sculpture/jewelry piece done.

I'm trying to work on some 3D sculpting to maybe streamline and speed up the process, but the results I've gotten from test models so far, I'd still want to do the final detail by hand...so not sure if that'd really work out much better, but I'm hoping!

Ah that's fair enough. Was expecting you to say over the $400 mark for sure. It's well worth it when you have tangible artworks like that, though. A whole new dynamic. Definitely want something like it some day xP

When the factory does their version of the sculpt, what do they start with? Do they do it straight from drawings, or do you send them a 3d model, or a physical prototype?

The one on the left started from drawings. In this case, they shipped us a physical prototype because we were going to attempt to display it at AC (but they shipped it too late, so it didn't make it). I will be shipping them back the modified sculpture and they will work from that, but they can also work from 3D models in the computer. :) May go this route in the future to speed production along some.

I'd guess so, but I'm not entirely sure since the making of the base and the general assembly will be up to the factory.

Oh do you sandpaper before or after its baked?

After. I try to smooth it as much as possible before baking, but then after baking, to get it really smooth I sand first with a rougher sandpaper to get the surface even, then finer grits to kind of polish/smooth more.

It's honestly probably not helpful because the company I'm working with did this for me with the intent of us doing a run of 500+ pieces, I don't think they would just do a single one-off by itself.
