This is Vanessa. She is a Chinese praying mantis who lives somewhere in the parking lot of the car dealer where I work. She's been my friend since yesterday. She has a bit of an attitude, and she scratched my finger twice, but other than that, she's a pretty sweet little bug. She's curious about everything, and at one point she crawled on my camera! She loves to dance, too!

This is a Chinese mantis. She's about as long as a pair of glasses and as wide as an adult's index finger. All female mantids are usually bigger than males. Vanessa is huge for an insect, and if she were male, then the female would have to be bigger than her, so it would probably be something that belongs in a monster movie! I've never found a male mantis, or a nymph. The only other mantis I found years ago was a female Chinese mantis, just like Vanessa.
