All anthropomorphic characters must have an origin story. So here is my story of how 'Rob Cat' the bobcat was created...
When my RL self was still living on Long Island, I used to frequent a number of comic book shops (where I got my 'funny animal' fix, in the form of such titles as "Albedo", "Fusion", "Critters" and "Usagi Yojimbo", among other titles). One such store was Collector's Comics in Wantagh, NY.
In 1990, they'd held a contest, asking patrons to design a new T-shirt for the store. (The winning entry would be made into said garment, one of which would be given free to its creator.) Logically, I'd figured that most of the entrants would draw the obligatory images of DC and Marvel Comic characters. I, myself, chose to put some emphasis on the name 'Collector's Comics', by drawing an image of someone with a collection of comic books. And since I like anthropomorphic characters, I decided to make my 'collector' an animal, instead of human.
Inspired by images of a bobcat I saw in an article in "National Geographic" magazine at the time, I drew a 'funny animal' version of this particular breed of feline - engrossed in reading his favorite comic book.
Needless to say, my entry didn't win the contest, but I'd garnered a much bigger prize by introducing a new character to the world of 'funny animals'. In other words, a star is drawn!
'Rob Cat' would eventually be a regular fixture to fanzines such as "The Dallas Brawl Update" and "Rowrbrazzle", and he made his only comic book appearance in "In The Zone" (a tribute to the late artist Michael-Scot McMurry).
So, were it not for my interest in comic books (and anthropomorphics), AND this contest, I would not be here today!

I'm checking whitepages.com...
Okay, Cosmic Comics checks; they're still at 246 Merrick Road, and their number is 516-763-1133. Says they're in Baldwin, though.
No sign of Collector's Comics in the Wantagh area, though. Sorry.
Yep, confirmed; Collector's Comics has been gone at least two years. Again, sorry about that.

Thanks for the data, Wanderwolf!
I'm sorry to hear that Collector's Comics went out of business back in 2006 (but I'm not surprised, considering how many other stores have fallen to the wayside due to America's struggling economy).
But I'm glad to hear that Cosmic Comics is still around. I first visited the store in the early 1980s, when it was located in Rockville Centre, and it was there that I'd discovered early issues of "Albedo" and "Critters". A few years later, the store relocated to its current Baldwin address. (I wonder if the same storekeeper is running the place; or if it's under new management.)

Thanks, Gene! I really appreciate the positive feedback.
I was hoping to even do a regular webcomic with Rob Cat (and some of his associates), but considering the competition (including your own serialized work) and the lack of time I have to draw a regular strip (these days), I'd settled for occasional appearances of the bobcat in various 'zines throughout the 1990s and this decade. But you never know... because of his continuous exposure (in both 'hard copy' and the Internet), my character just might become a 'breakout star' in the not-too-distant future.
