It is a wolf spider: http://www.usq.edu.au/spider/find/spiders/476.htm
Although a rather large specimen if it was 5" long. Most barely reach 2". They are mildly poisonous, but shouldn't cause a problem unless you're allergic to their venom. However, I don't think I'd want to try that with one that size. Heh!

There are variations in coloring and details. But looking at the pattern right behind the head, you can see the same pattern in both spiders. I think the body form is very similar, but the main argument (as I pointed out) is the size is much larger than a typical wolf spider. But, in checking other sources, I find some wolf spiders can reach 5 to 6" across. As there are over 2,000 species of wolf spiders, I still say that's what you have here.

I don't blame you! :)
I was laying on my side in bed one lazy Saturday morning when I heard this scratching sound behind me. I turned over, and found myself staring into the face of a 2" wolf spider on my pillow about 2 to 3 inches from my head. I don't think I ever got out of bed that fast before or since!

I have a bad history with wolf spiders. I had a couple of run ins. Both when I was four, both while camping. One while I was on the toilet and one on my chest when I woke up on the other occasion x.x Trust me, they're the reason I'm an arachnophobic now.
Unless you know of a different kind of spider that's big, grey, hairy, and has huge black eyes. I refuse to look at links because those yes terrify me

I think they must get pretty freaking huge because we had some in our basement at my old house (like a colony or something @.@ TONS OF THEM) and I found a dead one, once, that was AT LEAST 8" long. SCARIEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN. It looked like it came from another fucking PLANET.
Was looking through your gallery, cause your art is super cute.
AAAAND then I saw this..... and had to stare in shock. *shudder* I'm horribly arachnophobic, so.. imagining a WOLF spider THAT long.. Oh dear god.. I wouldn't have been able to get within 5 feet of that thing, especially since wolf spiders jump. o______________________o;;;;;;;
I hope you used a rediculous zoom lens, otherwise you're mighty brave....

:O You put that in a jar?? Gah, I seriously would have run.. and there would have been much screaming. But I'm a dork. XD;
Yeah we had a black widow outside my house a couple of months ago .. dragging an egg sack. *gag* Thankfully it was killed, obviously not by me. :P
D'aww you watched me back. <3
