Also known as the Hammerhead Stork, the Hamerkop keeps to the locales from Madagascar to Arabia. They are known for their strange ‘ceremonies’ in which up to ten birds gather to run circles around each other while fluttering and calling.
They show up in many cultures mythologies and superstitions, including a Malagasy belief that anyone who is to destroy the nest of a Hamerkop will contract leprosy. A similar belief amongst the Kalahari Bushmen states that robbing their nests results in being struck by lightning.
