A single magazine holds 35 rounds, so the ammo counter is only going to recognize what the chip in the magazine tells the counter what it has to work with. When the magazine is emptied and replaced the counter resets to 35.

What pretty much lead to this body type was having went back and played the original borderlands, i saw how the majority of the SMGs had straight magazines and how awesome that looked to me. So it lead to this.
