I love Will Vinton's "A Claymation Comedy Of Horrors", my favorite scene being that when Wilshire meets up with his undead granny, who is little more than a mere skeleton at the time. Every time I watch that scene, I always wonder to myself: "What was Granny like when she was alive? Come to think of it, what was Wilshire like when he was a kid, before he became the greedy, gruff, rude, hustling inventor/con artist pig we all know and love to hate?
Ironically, I tend to picture him as having been a kind of a nerdy, somewhat socially awkward little boy known mostly then as simply "Willie", who was born the runt of a littler of 3 bigger and stronger (albeit less intelligent) brothers. The kind of kid who had a tendency to bungle most everything he put his hands to and frequently found himself crammed in his locker/his head flushed in a toilet/hanging from the school flagpole by his tighty-whities. Despite this, he still did his best to smile and carry on with a surprisingly good sense of humor and was even at times, a little mischievous. Something of a class clown, even. Not only that, but the brains and inventive skills that he, unlike his brothers, had been blessed with would give him an edge in working with the inventions and machinery that he had begun to display an interest in (and later, money), his only hope for a bright new future. (Or so he thought, anyway..)
Most of all, all he really ever wanted was to make friend or two..
As for his Granny? I imagine Wilshire's parents were the kind that preferred to spend as little time around him as possible, so he spent much of his time at his Granny's house under her watch. For the most part, they usually got along okay. But, even in life, Granny was always something of ticking time bomb; Sweet and good-natured one minute, then turning on you the next (as evidenced by her selling out her own grandson in the Halloween special). Maybe she was an alcoholic or something? Or maybe she had some kind of dementia or other? Or both? Who knows?

Wilshire strikes me as the flipside of the perpetual underdog; bullied kid, not that physically capable, never able to get ahead. But also not the kind of guy to just dawdle hopefully through life like the everyman you see in movies. No, he's aware of his situation and actively fighting towards escaping it, not always (ok, hardly always) legally.

My feeling exactly. I also imagine that he got more aggressive and bitter about his situation as he got older and got to be around more people who were weaker than him (like Sheldon Snail). But part of me also likes to imagine that he may at one point, a long time ago, (like when he was really little) been an almost sweet kid. Even if he no longer remembers it or wishes to ever be that way again.
And in the Easter special we saw him go to some pretty dark extremes, what with feeding two rabbits to a shark (as I'm pretty sure the idea was for them not to survive the experience). As if the kidnapping of the Easter Bunny wasn't bad enough, he then was willing to resort to go so far as to actually try and murder him?!
Kinda makes me wonder what life has done to his mental or emotional stability, and a matter I find great story material in exploring.

Mind you, he wasn't actually going to be there for the murder. (Mind, he treated the supposed death of his associate very coldly.) Maybe murder just isn't as severe in that universe, I mean, you can always come back as the undead or whatever.
And that easter bunny, not the most orange carrot in the basket is he?

Yeah, maybe. Nevertheless, I still like the idea of the wrongness of his actions being something he'll eventually be forced to have to come to terms with, especially if pushed to do so by the proper circumstances.
Mind you, my fan-writing style doesn't always match up with those of the creators. It seems to be in my nature to take simple, humorous characters made for children and develop their character to deeper levels, often putting them in darker or more mature situations than their creators would have dared to do so. LOL
I was wondering, have you ever been to DeviantArt? 'Cause at the risk of plugging, that's where I got a fanfic I'm working on about these guys, (possibly the first-ever Wilshire Pig-centric fanfiction publicly written to the best of my knowledge) if you're interested in checking it out.

I was an earlish adopter of DA, been there quite some time.
It's actually not that uncommon to see people take a story further, just look at the MLP fandom which has never met a cheerful little tale it can't weave into utter horror. I find myself divided on the subject; on the one hand what it is is what it is, taking a simple and basic story and trying to bend it to logic and the 'real world' changes what it is, defeats its purpose and design. On the other hand as you note it can be interesting to explore and follow the threads to their logical conclusion.
And yeah, if it exists it IS the first fic, I've done some checking on various fanfic sites. (But not DA, never seen it as a big fic site.)

Ho boy, don't I know it. Although, for what it's worth, the fic I'm working on isn't exactly what I'd call pure horror, though some horrific elements are lpresent, in scattered doses throughout. Moreover, the idea is to focus on a misguided character's road to redemption and ultimately, true love.
Heh.. Don't know if that sounds like your cup of tea or not, but if you're willing to give it a chance, look no further: batsy-fey.deviantart.com/art/Good-Wilshire-Hunting-pt-1-435131796
Chapter 1 is there. There should be links to the next chapters in the artists comments (though you might have to copy and paste to access them, screwy site that DA has become).
Come on over! I've got the only Wilshire Pig fanfic in town.
