well the big eyes is actually explainable
early anime and manga took ideas from Disney. Disney's main characters have rather large eyes. Larger eyes appeal to people because it makes the character look more open and vulnerable, therefore more sympathetic
So the exaggerated the eyes...sometimes to a point where its just too weird :o
