Call me old fashioned, but I personally prefer old school heavy artillery like the M1903, 30-06. It may be bolt action, but it's rock solid reliable and will put a really big hole in things modern smaller caliber rifles can't. Then again, I'm too much of a lightweight to fire it except from a rest. The sound and the heavy recoil are just so solid and satisfying though, though my shoulder may occasionally disagree. :P

I have my late grandfather's old rifle. He was issued one in WWII (Pacific Theater, Anti-aircraft artillery unit) and when he got back he bought one for himself because he liked it so much. It's not exactly the sort of thing you'd expect a girl to hang on to but it makes me feel a little safer at home. Although it's a little unwieldy, it's scary-powerful and has a very nice bayonet which I've had the opportunity to learn how to use properly.
