My guess, judging from her dream and conversation with the psychiatrist and the other victim's dream - this thing has "infected" them, but it can't properly manifest itself through their bodies until it has completely taken over their minds and wills. Basically, my hypothesis is that, from the moment they were "infested", they've technically been "dead" - what we have is a Thing-like situation where they believe themselves to be who they were, but are in reality just parts of that horror.

The dreams they're having? Those represent some core, almost sacred part of their memory and personality. When the one girl looked out the window and saw a hellscape befitting the creature, yet the space she was in, a memory, was untouched, that is the last part of herself resisting the assimilation. Our researcher has seen a manifestation of the entity in her "sanctum" and seems to be pretty unfazed by it, which to me indicates her corruption is farther along in progress. This difference in the progression of the spread of the corruption between the two hosts might have something to do with one of them having her memory erased.

These are just my hypotheses though. ;)
