Where I work we regularly have to search the customers and take away items that have not been issued to them, or have been altered from their original state.
What you see here was confiscated this morning. Yes, it is in fact a watercolors paint set.
You may wonder how they made it? Well, we asked, and I'm happy to pass it on.
For each color you'll need:
2 small liquid soap bottles, used (emptied and rinsed out)
2 Skittles candies™
Drop the Skittles candies into a bottle, add water and let it sit until all of the color leaches out of the candy shell and into the water. Then poke a small hole in the cap and filter the liquid into the empty soap bottle.
Voila!
You can vary the colors by using differently-hued Skittles.
Neat, eh? High marks for creativity.

Hello Walt,
A question regarding your Skittle™ - how long do they keep [ie, how long does the colorant last before precipitating / fading / developing mold] and does the water retain the taste of skittles? I think if you utilized rice paper you could make edible art - but am curious regarding the hygienics of large scale preparation.

You'd think art supplies would be made available to the less violent 'guests.' Even if they're not allowed to take the paint pots and brushes to their 'rooms,' they should still be able to make use of the supplies in the 'rec room' under 'supervised play.'
Then again, I still believe the penal system should be one of rehabilitation, of taking people who have made poor life choices and helping them become productive members of society. I know about both the gangland control within the prisons, and the 'penal-industrial complex' seeking to keep the prisons overcrowded and understaffed to maximize profits, but the wide-eyed idealist in me refuses to allow those details to be internalized. i know it, but my mind refuses to make the connections to fit it in with my worldview.
