Yes, Part 1. Because I did SO MANY RECORDINGS at this con, I can't fit them all into one submission!
I'm always grateful when a con lets me host my Voice Acting Workshop panel. It's a huge thing when a convention lets me host two voice acting panels. RMFC 2014 let me host THREE voice acting panels.
Granted, I only recorded two of them. Earlier this year I attended BLFC which helped me out big time by putting my panel in a room instead of in the noisy open floor like last year. Only problem was, they only gave me one hour. And I was sandwiched between two other panels. Anyone who's been to my panels knows there's a fair amount of gear involved, and it takes me a good 20-30 minutes before and after the panel to set up and tear down the gear. So with only an hour to do everything at BLFC, I had the choice of only recording for 15 minutes tops... or just not recording at all.
I ended up leaving the recording gear in my hotel room and just having attendees perform the scripts. And it was terrific. Some even mentioned to me how relaxed it was without all the gear, just letting everyone perform the way they wanted. It was such a success, I chose to bring another "Unplugged" voice acting workshop to RMFC, where it was once again a huge success. I think this may be a regular panel for me!
RMFC also gave me a Friday slot for my panel which became my first recorded workshop. Unfortunately, it was scheduled on top of the fursuit games, so it was not as well attended as it could have been. That's why you'll see a number of people's voices appearing twice in these recordings. I usually try to only let people go up once so everyone has a chance, but everyone who wanted to record did and we had extra time, so I let people have some fun with it.
Another big difference you may hear is from the recording gear. The last couple years, I've been devoted to using AT4040 studio microphones on mic stands top try to emulate the equipment you find in professional voice over booths. But this summer, my job had me doing dozens of recordings in all kinds of awful, echoey, noisy locations, so I had to learn to use headword microphones and noise filtering software. I had so much success with both I decided to change the gear I brought to RMFC, making this my first time using headworn microphones at a con. I got pairs from two different models-- the inexpensive Audio-Technica PRO 8HEx and the high-resolution Countryman ISOMAX. For these recordings, I used the PRO 8HEx which required considerable EQ to get sounding good and suffered from a lot of breath noise. Because the microphone is on a flexible arm, it was very easy to push the mic in front of the mouth, and I wasn't vigilant enough to keep the mics in the right positions. But still, I think these headworn mics were a hit, giving me super clean, easy-to-edit audio, and giving the attendees more freedom of movement while they're performing. I'll likely be bringing the same microphones with me for future panels!
I held another recorded panel at RMFC on Sunday that I'm editing right now and will post up as soon as it's done. That one will be with the ISOMAX microphones, so you may hear a considerable quality difference. But here's the stuff from Friday, and a big thank you to everyone who attended my panel!
