My work wife and I were sharing stories of our weekends,
swapping cell phone pics and tales of debauchery, when
she piped up with an interesting observation:
"Your furriness is reflected in everything that you do.
Even your boat is furry."
I stopped and thought and concluded that she was correct.
I didn't tell her that because you never want to give the wife
the upper hand, but never the less, it's true that my
entire life is now filtered through the lens of the furry fandom.
Paw print stickers on the fridge. Furry license plate frames on the car
and trucks. A wardrobe mainly composed of furry themed t-shirts.
I spend my vacations flying around the country to meet up with
my nutty extended family. I spend too much dough on fursuits
and I obsess about every detail. I dress up as a giant dog and
think it's socially acceptable behavior.
FA is open on my phone all the damn time...
How did this happen to an otherwise normal guy?
Don't laugh, I was normal. Really.
Five years ago, I heard the term "furry" for the first time.
That evening, I sat down and did a quick computer search to
see what the heck it meant.
I saw all kinds of things. I was glued to the monitor.
Then I saw my first fursuit.
I turned to my dogs and said "Oh, I'm gunna do this."
They both nodded, as if unsurprised.
See? Normal.
So here it is five years later, and if I try to imagine my life without
this fandom, well, I just can't.
I never would have met any of you, forged such lasting and wonderful
friendships, and had all these hours of silly fun.
I never would have been a giant dog.
I never would have known the joy of making a stranger smile.
I never would have experienced all those hugs.
I never would have seen the sheer beauty in the imagination of a child.
I also would never have experienced the stark terror of
a convention elevator at 2 in the morning, but I digress.
I love to ask folks how they found furry and what it means to them.
Everyone has a unique tale and everyone interprets the fandom
in a different way.
How did this all happen to you?
Why the heck are you here and how does it affect your life?
And would you go for a boat ride if a talking dog was behind the wheel?

Hey great looking boat Donzi there DB, would I trust you behind the controls of said Donzi... Maybe would depend on the water conditions. I have seen a couple of them try to act like a submarine at speed.
I have run 40 to 86 foot boats in the past and know the rules of the road the same can not be said of many running boat and jetskis. I enjoyed my old 15 foot Fiberform Fish-n-Ski with a Homelite Bearcat outboard I would clip along at about 18 to 20 knots. The nice thing about the Homelite I could go out all day in Lake Washington and never use a six gallon can of fuel.
What really got me interested in the fandom was a housemate back in 1991 he gave me a name to what I was running around in my brain. I always found animals were far more expressive and honest then we humans... just watch a dog and see where their ears are and what their tail is doing....

Yes, this is a little old boat, and I'm super careful when the water gets snotty!
I didn't know you ran boats! That's very cool. That old Homelite was a great outboard-
you still see them advertised on Craigslist occasionally and they are in demand.
And I agree, a dog's ears tell all!
Thank you for the wonderful comment, as always.

I like kicking the Honda people when they start braying about Honda being the first four cycle outboard or they were the first to have one over 30 hp. Nope Fagol had a 35 in 58. Then they say we were the first to have one at 50 hp... nope Homelite Bearcat at 55 hp in 61. Then they say well we were they first to have one of 70 hp, nope Bearcat 85 in 67 I think it was. Then they say we we were the first to use overhead cam nope Fagol used overhead cal from the start. Then they say "well I never heard of them..."
I have two of them complete in storage and a third one with out a lower unit but I have to two more lower units. Finding props for them is the hassle.

"My work wife..."
I knew you were bi..curious!
"Paw print stickers on the fridge. Furry license plate frames on the car

Don't forget the flag. Yea...that flag...wait...you didn't put it on
your boat! D:
But all jokes aside, long story short, my first getting into "furry"
all started in 1999 pretty much. And here it is, 15 years later,
and still kicking.

Started from this website:
http://wolfhome.com/
It was really an older site, its just been redone
and has gone through some huge changes.
There's another story behind how I found out
about that site, but it'd be way to long to post here,
and I don't want to flood the message box.

I went to the old "Conifur" up here in the Seattle are back in 2001.... no theme music was playing though!
I was actually seeking out the Dragon community. You see, I may dress as a big Fox, but I am acutally Dragon. I thought seeing the "fursuiters" was unusual, as in just something different. Over the next couple of Conifurs, I got more used to seeing them ans also seeing how much fun they were having. I just simply said to my self... I want to do that. It took over 10 years until I did. I once tried on someones foot paws and head and thought, this IS fun. At a party I tried on a tail. Seeing a tail behind me, felt, normal, it felt natural. I somehow felt whole. All this further pushed me to make my suit.
It was labor of love and it took me nearly two years to make my suit. Once the body suit was done I was excited to put it on..even without paws, tail or head. One all those were done came the big moment. Putting on the full suit. My pulse quickened and excitment filled me. I can go on and ramble, I will not bore you. All I can say is that since I have worn, I have become that Fox, my life changed in ways I would have never though. The sheer and unbridled joy is beyond words. Then, I trying dancing in fursuit...and trust me I was no dancer when this started. Fursuit dance is not only a joy, it is a freedom the likes I have never known.
What would my life be with out this fandom. I do not even want nor care to take a guess. I don't need to. I don't want to. Furry, it is who and what I am. It has brought a joy into my life the likes I have never know. My world has expanded exponentially, so many others like me, I now call friend and all share in this joy. Why on Earth would I ever want to change that or remove that from my life.
So there Big Dog, Lower that engine, you get the stern line, I'll get the bow line and push off. You get that engine started and lets go for a ride!!!!

Since we already exchanged our discovery stories of the fandom, I don't need to go into detail, let's just say the Lion King movie played a huge role in it for me. I agree that amazing people like you I got to know through it are just as dear to my heart as all the furry fuzziness the fandom offers. And going on a boat trip with you would totally float my boat Let's talk about that when I'm over there next month
It's sort of like "The Godfather". Just when I think I'm focused on something non-furry, it pulls me back in.
Although I suppose it could eventually happen, right now it's hard imagining life minus all you guys playing some sort of part in it. Fandom's pretty ingrained in me now.
Oh yes! I'd absolutely board any vessel helmed by Capt. Dogbomb! Just wait a few while I go get my water wings. :)

Four sentences, then off to work:
1) September, 2009 - Reuters RSS newsfeed on Furry in Europe starring Tani DaReal got pushed onto my screen.
2) Click on fursuiting on youtube and saw the same 1st video that Kijani did about fursuiting in London, then heard the call.
3) Did all my art, designed the whole thing, but had no idea why or how I'd ever use a fursuit, then had Beastcub suggest I read about a guy named Dogbomb.
4) Once I did, everything clicked into place and my fate was sealed.
Though I haven't put any paw prints on any of my cars, nor do I own a furry T-shirt. I suppose I ought to get one made someday.

There was always something about cartoon critters, and a brief stint as the high school mascot. Onward through life, sneaking cartoons when I could. About 5 years ago, (what is it with 2009, and furrys?) saw the CSI episode, and wondered. Within an evening on the net, and a long drive to ponder it all, I was in. I became the skunk I am, but almost walked away. Then...
I happened across some beer drinking dog, and thought, this guy. He's on to something. Half a year later, fur, glue, needles, thread, got the rush of a lifetime. I stay, because being furry keeps me living, not just alive.
Push the throttle over, best speed at your discretion!

when I was younger my Dad and my uncle had bought this boat that they named after some girl.
They sent it out into the middle of the lake, but while we were rowing water started flowing in, and
we started to sink! So my Dad puts me on his head and climbs into the water with my uncle to
push the boat to the shore cx
They came out of the water covered in leaches and were picking them off for hours hahaha
and that is my last boating experience with my father haha
I don't let him buy boats anymore cx

Not only do you have a paw-print flag on your boat, but the words "ankle biter" as well! That's pretty furry (doggy-furry) if you ask me!
So... how I found the fandom... oh boy, this could get long.
I had seen a few furry art "slide shows" on YouTube years before I found the fandom, but they weren't obviously furry, as I think about them now. Mostly just people showcasing their (mostly) digital drawings of animals. I hardly gave a thought that there might be something more than just a casual interest in animals behind the art. That despite the fact that most of these artist made up stories to go with their art and characters, just like I did (though I didn't do it online)!
But then came the fateful day....
It was January 3rd, 2012, about 3:30 PM. My parents were out at an appointment and I had permission to use my Dad's computer while they were gone. If I hadn't had said permission, I* probably would've used my own--a hand-me-down from my Dad--but it was so slow that I doubt I'd have been on YouTube. Usually it crashed if I tried to visit that site. At the time I was happily clueless about computers. Now I'm a total geek! But I digress.
So there I was, on YouTube while my parents were away. I was searching up videos about cougars (the animal, not the old woman or sports team or car). I was looking for an old Disney movie called Run, Cougar, Run! This movie was made in 1972, if I remember rightly. (There's also an earlier live-action Disney movie called Charlie the Lonesome Cougar, from 1964 I think, which has since been released to DVD and is on YouTube.) I was hoping that Run, Cougar, Run would be on YouTube also, but it isn't. [EDIT: now I just found out that it is, or at least the trailer! See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChbO3P6E61o ]
I looked through the search results, ignoring as best I could all the videos that obviously weren't about pumas. And I came to one called "Running cougar". I thought, seeing the thumbnail, that there was something funny about not only the location (a city sidewalk), but also the cougar itself. It was only two seconds long, so I thought, what the heck, and I watched it. The "cougar" was actually a guy in a cougar mascot suit trying to run on all fours, but the head started to fall off! You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_J93aTLjglU
I chuckled a bit and was about to click "back" when I saw one of the video suggestions in the player screen. It was called "Public Fursuiting a Kalahari part 1". "What's 'fursuiting'?" I wondered. I had limited time on the computer that afternoon (it had to be off before my parents returned), so I didn't want to waste any time. I wavered a bit between watching the video or skipping it, but I reasoned that this was a fast computer, and if I didn't like the video I could always go back. I clicked on the video.
That one little click of the computer mouse CHANGED MY LIFE.
Here was someone walking around the Kalahari amusement park (not the waterpark part) in a cartoony animal costume! Was this person crazy?! I went immediately for the "back" button on the browser....
A couple of minutes later I thought "Why am I still watching this? This is ridiculous!"
A bit later still: "But it is a cougar costume..." (I had already been obsessed with cougars for at least a year or two by then.)
A couple of more minutes later (this video is over 12 minutes long): "That does look like fun..."
About a minute later: "Where can I get a costume like that? (I'd never wear it out in public, though!)"
Another minute later (having figured out what a "fursuit" is): "I want a fursuit! Can I buy one? Or am I going to have to make one? Either way I'm going to have one!"
By the time the video ended: "Wow, going out in fursuit like this looks like fun! I wanna try that!! " (Notice my complete about-face in opinions in about five minutes?!) I had noticed that while quite a few people laughed about the fursuiter, no one was laughing at her. (The fursuit owner and the character are both male, but it was the guy's girlfriend inside the suit that day. Or in any case, a female.) Costumed characters, I realized, are common at amusement parks (I've never been to one, not being much interested).
I watched a bit of Part Two of the video, then went on to other stuff. Then I turned the computer off for the day.
But I couldn't get that fursuit video out of my head! It was just totally stuck there (and I was happy to have it stuck there)! At the very next opportunity, I turned the computer on, went straight to YouTube, and typed "cougar fursuit" into the search box. You can guess what happened next.... I saw no only the two videos I'd already seen, but there were many more! I found Calamity Cougar
and his pals (and quickly learned of his obsession with lawn chairs). Next, I think, came Damaron Wolf
. Damaron and Calamity were the first two furries I learned to identify by sight (and OneFurAll was the first fursuit brand I was able to recognize, probably because that was the brand of Damaron's suit). Then, within a few hours (or, at the most, a day or two) I learned that there CONVENTIONS for these people! And websites! And far more fursuit videos than I could ever count!!
I guess the rest is history, right? A few months later, I got my first E-mail account (Hotmail), just so I could join Fur Affinity. There was no other reason! I also learned how to really use a computer, and how to maintain, update, and upgrade one, all so I could watch furry videos on my old slow computer without it crashing too often. That thing ran Windows XP Home Edition with 250 MB of RAM, and if I didn't keep the system very clean (running MycleanPC at least once a week), it became very unstable. Much later, in 2014, when my second computer (Windows XP Pro) died, I built a new one in the old portable chassis-- look here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13393099/ --and switched to Linux (having begun using it a few months before that). I've since downloaded, installed, and tested well over a dozen Linux operating systems and am now very interested in other free operating systems, especially AROS and ICAROS, which are based on AmigaOS, and Haiku, which is based on BeOS.
so there you have my furry story. I told you it could get long. Hope you enjoyed it!

so there you have my furry story. I told you it could get long. Hope you enjoyed it!
Wow, very cool!
I really enjoyed your story and thank you very much for sharing.
We really did have a similar experience upon viewing a fursuit for the first time;
What is that? That's cool! I AM GOING TO GET ONE!
I'm so glad that you got to use your parents' computer on that fateful day,
and that you are a part of this crazy fandom.
Cheers, my friend.
Thank you again for the great comment and the wonderful story.

You're very welcome! I'm glad I was able to use Dad's computer that day too! And I was glad to share that story. I always love telling it, but I seldom take the time, because I like to go into detail.
I've been a furry for years before I found the fandom... in fact, all my life. I had just turned 18 shortly before that day and I ws aondering if I was a bit crazy for still likeing, as Uncke Kage puts it, "cartoon animals" and dressing up as an animal. Then I found the Furry Fandom and what a relief! I'm not crazy (at least not in the bad way)! I'm a furry!!!
As you may have noticed from my story, I tried to suppress my furry side when I first saw that video, but that didn't last ling! My furry side took over VERY quickly, and (probably because my parents weren't around) I was glad to let it!
