Their civilization used to send ships into that thing, but none of them ever came back.

Very mysterious, thought provoking and wonderous :)
Where do they go? What happens? What's it like? What does it look Like? Is it possibly better than here? More beautiful? More full of life and Love and joy?
Or do they go to their doom? Do the die physically ? spiritually? Forever cursed and blind in eternal darkness and decay? Forever separated from love and peace and joy?

Maybe they simply disappeared into an infinite void without a point of orientation. Maybe there is something unsettling living beyond that celestial crevasse that swallowed those ships whole. Maybe they simply were destroyed by extreme, cosmic forces. Maybe they found their species equivalent for paradise on the other side and decided to never look back. Pick one possibility to your liking.
Sure, all those reasons are sad. But something must have happened to prevent the ships from returning with their findings. Since those given facts are sad I guess the reasoning behind them are sad too. Also it creates an air of mystery around that spatial anomaly and makes it extra more menacing than before.
I love the color and mood of this piece! The one-sentence story is lovely and leaves my imagination wanting more. :)
For some reason, the concept of a hole in the sky always reminds me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_5qgXV9j5w

Oh WOW…. this is just… amazing. I love the concept behind it, not to mention the art. You have captured such emotion here. I love art that captures a feeling, you don't get a lot of that nowadays. Plus, you have a story behind this. It makes me wonder what happened to them, what happened before this, what happened after… it is fascinating. Your background is beautiful, the way that darkness swirls in on itself, the various planets/moons in the sky… I love the glow around the darkness, and how the creatures stare upon it, and how the glow highlights them. As though they expect a miracle from it.
Good gosh I'm so glad I stumbled upon your art.
