"Fursuit Mohawks/Hair: Styling & Creativity How-to!"
Good evening ladies and gents!
I just decided to do a little segment on getting creative with mohawks/hair on your fursuit head! Now before I begin, I will say that some mohawks on fursuit heads are different and can be a little bit harder to style depending on what is being used (such as horse-hair or stiffer materials like kanekalon, also NFT depending on what type), but for this explanation, I'm using "Beck" as an example, who has a relatively simple faux-fur mohawk. I've seen so many fursuits with mohawks but I haven't seen them be used much other than the generic way. I'd love to see people get more ideas for styles :D
What you need!
❖ Your fingers!
❖ A comb! (optional)
❖ Some water!
❖ Styling hairspray (optional, better when the fur is longer and needs to keep a specific shape)
❖ Some good music c:
A good way to start is to look at your fursuit head's expression/eyebrows. What sort of image are you trying to convey? Is he/she snarky, or modest? Calm, or crazy? Let your imagination run wild!
After that, you can take a bit of water on your fingers and play around with pulling the hair backwards or forwards, or perhaps off to the sides, or just combing it in different directions. Usually for shorter fur, it doesn't take much water. If your suit's hair is longer, I do recommend using a comb and taking your time, and don't jerk the comb through unless you want to pull the fur/hair out! Whenever I'm coming the bang + mohawk of my own personal suit, I gently pull pieces of the kanekalon apart by hand and gently comb through them to get out tangles, then go over it with a brush to give it some extra "fluff." It works for me :D For longer hair, you definitely might want to use a little bit of hairspray if you're trying to keep the style a specific way, such as something with super pointy areas. A lot of cosplayers do it with their wigs for conventions.
I decided to go ahead and take photos of some of the different styles I was able to create on Beck after I finished getting photos of him for his new owner. Again, I just used my fingers and a little bit of water, and his hair is pretty flexible.
Casual and Free! (Starting from the top, left to right) :
✰ 1. Generic mohawk! This style is something I see a lot, and it's okay! It's the basic form of the mohawk, but it usually just sticks straight up. It works if you're going for that more old-school rock sort of look.
✰2. Sweeping forward mohawk! Another mohawk like the first, but the hair is gently combed forward and then pushed upwards into a point. Sort of like Elvis's hair. It has a bit more of a classier look to it, but still works casually.
✰3. Solar flare mohawk! So this was definitely one of the more fun ones to do, because it allows you to just go crazy with it! It's literally still the same mohawk shape, but you pinch and draw the pieces of hair into little spikes and pull them out in different directions, which looks incredibly Dragonball-Z-ish, lol.
✰4. Backwards sweeping mohawk! Another common one I've seen, but instead of the mohawk going forward, you brush it backwards. Works really well for a sort of "windblown" look.
Dignified and Established (Starting from the bottom, left to right)
👓 1. Forward bang! It works if you're trying to stay simple, and definitely gives off a sort of shy or reserved look.
👓 2. Slicked back! This REALLY works if you're going for that sort of incredibly charming high-class sort of guy. I personally thought it looked kind of cute.
👓 3. Sideswept bang! This one is similar to the first bang, but it is instead combed off towards one side. It can also be seen as (if Bryce's hair was fuller and a bit longer in this case) as the "Skater hairstyle," which I see a lot in more urban-style suits and characters.
👓 4. Slicked back variation! Similar to the 2nd one in this category, but you take some of the front pieces of the mohawk and either pull them out to the sides and down/back. While they're pressed down to the head, it gives off a much more "proper" look. Though you possibly might even be able to pull them upwards and have them kind of stick up like anime-styled hair characters with exaggerated bangs. I'm not sure--I haven't tried that yet!
I hope this inspires people to get more creative with the hair on their fursuits. If you've got one, work with it! "Beck" is owned by
