The original sketch and the original blocking of color are included at the top, for reference, on the bottom are four different methods of of coloring. I was experimenting. it is recommended that you look at it in full otherwise the differences are hard to see.
A grid of faces:
1 2
3 4
5 6
1- original sketch
2- color blocked in
3- pencil shaded
4- colored then smoothed to get a smooth but sharp look
5- cell shaded
6- more detailed and alternative style of cell shading.
All six were done on the computer.
Thoughts on how the different methods of shading came out would be appreciated.

Personally, I don't like any one of them the best. I like facets of them! I think you should try them all together maybe.
I like the mouth shaded darker, like in 4. I really like the hair in 6 [maybe needs some stronger highlights just for...highlight, just in the darker part]. The eyes in 5 are my favorite [though maybe a touch lighter in the whites of her eyes would be good]. And I think I like the neck shading in that one, too, but it could stand to be more contrasted like the colours you used in 4. I also like her nose in 5.
3 isn't bad, it's just too grainy for my personal tastes! I think the colours look good and it's a cool effect, I'm just more of a smooth person. ^^ Love the hair shading in that one.
They all look great and I really like the way you block your colours in, I can't even make anything good without lineart yet. :C I want to do lineless colouring someday!

Thanks!
You bring up an excellent point, I hadn't thought of the pictures as anything other then complete works to compare to each other, but really pulling the best parts of each would be far more useful.
I guess I'm to much connected to my work to look at objectively.
It's really nice that you like the hair in 6, I wasn't sure how that would go over, despite it being a really natural way for me to think of hair.
And line less art? In my experience (admittedly a poor sampling) it's more the media that you use that affects that, then anything else. In colored pencil or oil based I can do it really easily, far easier then I can draw with lines; in cell I can do line less alright, but in just about every other medium I've tried I really start to look really poor without the lines. You probably just haven't found the medium that resonates with the part of your mind that thinks that way.
