A jagged rock ‘neath clouds of gray that laugh
As they grow darker still and break and churn
To mock the sea, stuck in its hole without
Escape from gravity’s unfailing chains –
This is where I have made my lonely perch
To watch the brewing strom that spits on me
In tiny drops of warmth while jealous waves
Endeavor long to spit as well. Alas
With colder drops they fling an envious rage
As more and more they ram the rough rock face
To break and fall with every new attempt.
Ignorin this I stare into the clouds
Still rooted to the ground beneath my feet,
Yet not so rooted that I cannot try
To soar and fall back like the ocean waves.
As lightning flashes it descends to rest
Upon my outstretched hand and like a dove,
It gently folds its wings and perches there –
There on my palm as I perch on the rock,
But in an instant it is flown away.
I see it in the distance calling me
And with its help I do not fall this time.
I leave the jealous waves and jagged rock
And fly like lightning through the pulsing sky.
