Ni Hei was born in Tientsin, Chinese Empire, in 1885. The Ni Family had been a clan of moneylenders going back many centuries, so it rankled Hei when he was shipped off to the United States as an "indemnity student" after the Boxer Rebellion. The United States and its missionaries decided to use the money given to them by the Imperial Government to send young Chinese to schools in America.
Unfortunately, Hei ended up attending the University of Illinois. In 1905, when things were a lot less tolerant than they are now. He came out of the college experience with a deep-seated hatred of America and Americans - oh yes, and a degree in Economics.
In 1929 he and his family, stranded on Spontoon Island after his entire clan was massacred by a local warlord, ended up on the infamous criminal haven known as Krupmark Island. He and his family have carefully rebuilt their fortune since then, killing competitors or enemies who might seek to destroy them.
Not that Hei does anything like that, of course, oh no. He's a businessman, in his fifties as of 1938.
