I found a shooting buddy while setting up for a session on the range today :) This is about a one year old juvenile Ring-neck snake for those that care to know.

I'll admit, it's quite substantial with some of the hotter loadings, though I will say bedding into the grip properly helps tame a portion of the punishment from recoil. Houge made some awesome cushioned grips that really help spread out the shock in your palm. Now, the short barrel versions of this model revolver are unavoidably harsh XD
That's a good question, there are several different muzzle brake/portings offered in the model 500 line that I'm aware of. What makes a brake useful and not just for looks, is if it purposefully directs the propellant gases in a direction to counteract some force on the gun. If a brake has symmetrical facing ports that simply vent at a perpendicular angle to the bore, the brake does absolutely nothing but amplify percussion on the shooter since the forces of the gasses are cancelling each other out. It is my finding that voluminous brake porting facing straight upwards is most effective on a revolver like this, since muzzle climb is substantial. Here's a picture of the particular brake I'm speaking of, which happens to be the same one on my revolver, http://www.dayattherange.com/wp-con.....s5-278x300.jpg you can see the amount of gas that it redirects in this picture, http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8582892/ it's the vertical gray colum in between the cylinder gap and muzzle flashes. In indoor ranges I've actually seen it disturb low drop ceiling tiles XD
In the case of rifles, there's more room for an effectively sized brake, and you'll notice that some even have very specific port locations intended to neutralize the high-right muzzle climd on right-hand semi and full auto rifles for example. In the journey for shear recoil reduction, gasses must be directed behind the plane of the muzzle, the more rearward the gas redirection the better. The most effective brake I've ever personally experienced was on an Armalite AR50, that baby will clear the shooting bench off if there's anything not weighted down XD http://picturearchive.gunauction.co.....e4703d6dee.jpg
I apologize if this is a little wordy, I just wanted to offer a more thorough explanation :)
