There is an old legend in the Catholic Church. Like many other patrons like Saint Barbara who helps the mine workers or Saint George, Dragon Slayer and patron of Great Britain, Saitn Hubertus is the patron of the hunters. He and the related Saint Eustachius/Eustace once med a Deer with a glowing cross bedween the antlers.
Eustachius was a Centurio of the Roman legends and very cruel. He had no others pleasures then hunting. He killed every living animal that crossed his way. But one day he killed the mother of a young deer and was punished by god with the plague. Suffering pain Eustachius travelled through the world to find cure for his desease. And then one night he saw a deer with a cross bedween the antlers and a voice told him: If you leave behind your cruel past you will be healed. Eustachius swore to do so and got baptised. At once he was cured and from that time forth he lived a good live. Thus Eustachius became a "patron against the plague"
As for Saitn Hubertus. He was a child from wealthy people, maybe of royal blood and his hobby was hunting. But with time hunting was everything in his live, he became addicted to hunting and he had no eyes even for his family. As his wive died alonside with his newborn child, his condition got even worse. He hunted from the dawning to the sunset just to forget the pain of his loss. And he met the deer with the cross and a voice said to him: Turn back. You are on the wrong path. Respect your live and the whole creation.
This had changed Hubertus´ mind and he founded a church on the place he med the deer with the cross and thus is how he became the patron of hunters.
