I'm on a 24 hour watch, and it sucks. Cheif just left after telling me to "Make the most of your time, and it is what it is." That got me thinking that although watch may suck that doesn't mean I cant enjoy it if look at it a little differently. That lead to a inspiration of sorts and I wrote this...Enjoy :D
Cheery Voices and music rolled over Jamie when he entered the bar Niko texted him to meet at. It was crowded and, to Jamie's surprise, well-kept for where Niko usually decided to crawl inside a bottle. The chromed edged, marble bar with more liquor against the back wall than Jamie knew existed was crowded, and he couldn't spot his old friend.
"Hmmm, usually he's drank himself half to death at the bar by this time." Jamie muttered.
"Jamie! Buddy! 'Mon over here and take a seat next to an old friend!” Niko shouted to Jamie's left.
Niko was seated in one if the many cherry red, black outlined booths with a bottle of rum and two glasses (one empty and one half full). "Soooo, do you want your glass half full or half empty?" Niko said picking up the half-filled bottle of rum.
Jamie sighed, "Just leave some room for Dr. Pepper. Half full or half empty, it doesn't matter. Either way there's still booze in the glass."
Niko nodded, "Half empty it is!" He poured Jamie’s glass till it was half empty. "So what's up bud? You're usually so enthusiastic to meet with me."
Jamie waved his hand dismissively, “It was a long day. Work sucked. Had to stay late, and when I got home my wife greeted me with a bitch out for missing dinner with her parents. Good thing my couch is comfy ‘cause I think coming see you was the cherry on top of our argument.”
“Well, at least the couch is comfy,” Jamie said with a shrug.
“You know, half of life is what’s happening around and to you.” Niko paused and emptied his glass then filled the glass half full again. “The other half,” Niko continued as he opened a Dr. Pepper, “is what you make of it and how you let it affect you and those around you.” The Dr. Pepper followed the rum into the glass till the glass was almost overflowing.
“There’s more to life than just reacting to what happens,” Jamie argued.
“For every action there an equal and opposite reaction,” Niko quoted. “One of the most basic Laws of science, my friend, and when applied to life it is an example of the patterns to life. Let’s take the situation you’re in now. You said yourself; you’re probably going to be sleeping on the couch tonight. Before you are many different ways for you to react to what is happening around you. You could choose to take your lumps and bruises. Whether you deserve them or not doesn’t matter, you could sleep on the couch, and greet you wife with a lovely breakfast in bed surprise,” Niko took a careful sip for his drink before clearing his throat. “Or you could be mad at the injustice of wrongfully being forced to sleep on the couch,” Niko sarcastically shouted angrily and slammed his fist on the table theatrically. A small frown crossed his lips as liquid sloshed over the side and on to the table from the impact. Niko wiped up the small spill and drained his glass.
Rum splashed in to the glass as Jamie poured it for Niko. “It seems your “life” was too full to handle the impacts happening around it.”
Chuckling Niko said, “And when the world shakes and your life spills over the brim of your cup, and you don’t know what to do or how to react or how you are going to clean up your spilt life is when you ask for someone to act as your napkin and help clean up the mess.”
Smiling with false sympathetically Jamie said, “Is Spilling your drink and then making another wild comparison your way of inadvertently asking for help?”
Letting out a snorting laugh Niko slapped his friends arm, “Oh Jaime, have you learned nothing from the years you’ve known me? I don’t ask for help.”
“What if your life spills over to the point your cup is almost empty? Then will you ask for help?” Jamie retorted.
“My cup isn’t empty,” Niko said before draining his glass. “Now it’s empty, and to answer your question; my life is already a mess, but I love the mess it made because I’ve made the best of it.” Niko drained Jamie’s glass, winked and left behind his friend and half a bottle of rum. Before he walked out the door Niko yelled “Remember! Make the most of life and take the path that will make the mess of life spilling over more enjoyable,” across the noisy bar, and then left into the night.
