A friend handed me his old GX-635 reel-to-reel tape recorder to repair. Mechanically, it works, but it has a dead channel. I know just about nothing about tape players, so we'll see how it goes! Historically, me working on tape players results in a horrendous mess of tape everywhere and the use of very colorful language. I can handle the electronics just fine, but there's an awful lot of mechanical stuff and tape in there! But hey, I've never worked on a reel-to-reel before, so it'll be a learning experience, right?
Unfortunately, I don't get to keep it once I fix it...

That is a weird coincidence!
And I'm sure it's not the head, and that it's the amplifier. If the head was bad, I should still hear some noise, buzz, or something on the left channel when the volume is cranked up regardless if the head works or not. But there is absolutely nothing.

O man.... I used a Studer/Revox A77 'half-track' recorder way back in 1984 to record the sound effects inside of a busy Bell Telephone rural Step-by-step (strowger) switching office. The results are sampled: http://www.wideweb.com/phonetrips/cdo834_3.ram Many an hours of music sound effects and just plain silliness are on tape. I dunno what to do with it.
