This is really cool. Also, I know how that is. There's a series about a guy cutting his tongue off with knives in my scraps because I couldn't get the image out of my head!
I don't even like that sort of thing! I don't want to hurt myself, so I have NO IDEA where it came from but I was trying to sleep and BAM KNIFETONGUE AAAAUUGH.

Burrows into other machines, to take them over, where it is from cyborgs and robots are more common, so it would have more targets, imagine optimus prime, getting attacked, it burrows in, then replaces the head with its own.
It can also use the smaller tentacles to add parts to it.
So when it looks similar to a humanoid, it can produce synthetic flesh to attempt to blend in. Granted if they have a weird shaped robot part it would look bad.
