People will complain about anything; can't please them all!
I don't know much about the game, but I read up a bit about the exos and I guess they were made a long time ago for an unknown purpose, and were recently re-activated? I'd imagine maybe they're like the shells from GiTS, maybe they used to get skin coverings over their body so they could blend in / appear more human.

They were indeed created by humanity a long time before the events of Destiny, during The Golden Age. They were self-aware war machines designed to protect their creator. As such being created by humans it only makes sense we would give them gender defining characteristics if we were going as far as assigning them genders in the first place.
It's not actually known who created them. The grimoire states that "Whoever built the Exos fashioned them in humanity's image, gifting them with diversity of mind and body."
For all we know it may have been a race that admired humanity, but became extinct long ago.

Unfortunately I don't know a whole lot about them either. My main is a male Exo warlock myself. From what I've read they were made in the image of man decades to centuries ago to protect the race that made them. It's not stated whether they failed or not, but the exos don't even remember what their purpose is. Some try to figure it out by causing intentional damage to themselves to get at forgotten memories, then have their ghosts repair them (as stated in one of the fragment grimoire cards), but none of them have been wholly successful yet.
Nice art again! I really dig how you can create this sense of perspective without even drawing a "proper" background.
<rant> <personal opinion> IMO Destiny had potential which was mostly wasted throughout the whole development process and, in the end, crippled by Activision's profit-orientated brand contract.
There's so much evidence that tons of content got cut from the game itself, resulting in it not living up to most people's expectations in a game labelling itself as one of the biggest game-changers in the whole industry, gameplay-wise and story-wise. Most likely Activision saves that content up for later to make even more money. Bungie itself propably wanted to do more, but well... they made friggin' Halo years ago. And now they release Destiny, a game which does not really click in any way it is right now. </rant> </personal opinion>

Thank you!
Yeah, I saw a whole post about what things looked like in production art, and how they ended up, aesthetically anyway. I don't know much about the gameplay besides it's sort of like Borderlands / Diablo. It seems interesting to me, but I'm already got a bit of an aversion to it because of what you and others have said!
