I've always been able to draw anything I can see really well. I've been working over the past 15 months to be able to draw ideas out of my head instead.
In this case, I had "My Yoshi Gamecase" as a "model". I sketched the Yoshi while looking at it, then fattened him up (just a little!). For animation and/or shading purposes, when I ink the sketches I usually put the body parts on different layers. In this case, that made it easy to transform Yoshi into a dragon, orca, falcon, and hippo - see Happi to be Yoshi.
