I've been wracking my brain to try and come up with a Trek type badge similar to the Star Wars themed wanted posters I've been doing off and on, but the LCARS interface we see in the shows and films is these lovely slick colors on black. I can sort of duplicate the effect with gel pens and black artagain paper, but I have to draw the whole thing out by hand, so that would make these kind of time consuming and expensive to do, especially at conventions. :-/
I'm going to try and take this and see if I can make up a digital template to reduce the amount of terrible handwriting I have to do, though I'm not sure it'll hold up as well on white. I really need something I can trace the lines through, heh.

As an alternative idea, what if you generated a basic template on a color printer? To keep the ink usage (and paper saturation down), most of the panels would be lighter colors, with black borders between the panels. The space for the portrait would naturally be left blank. For pre-convention badges, you could embed the writing on the panels. At-convention templates would be a little harder, as you'd either have to print them on demand, write everything by hand, or have a mix of hand-printed and computer printed text.
