Fact #3: Dragon treasure horde.
"So the winged red fox wants to know about dragon hordes and if those dragons are just like Smaug. I do not know this Smaug and some mages say that size of a dragon's horde effects their body. Honestly I do not know if treasure does something to a dragon but I do know that there are a few reasons dragons do have treasure hordes."
"If you think about it then it makes sense that dragons, like non-dragons have in the past have collections which include gold and diamonds because of the pretty shine. But after the metal and gems were given worth dragons started to change their small collection hobby of shiny things to a large horde of treasure."
"The chromatic dragons gather hordes of treasure to show off how strong and powerful they are over their territory and to boast some stories of how the treasure was increased. You all have a idea of how they get a horde. Simply from raiding or threatening towns, kingdoms, tribes, adventurers and even other dragons. Yet not all dragons keep there treasure out in a obvious area to show the horde off to others. In fact I should warn those who try to seek riches from the red dragons of the deep mountains. Since one of them has two stock piles of treasure, one is fake and easy to find while thee true treasure horde is deeply hidden. I am not sure of the dragon's name but he has both goblin and dwarf servants. The dwarves had the task to smelt worthless metal and coat them with a thin layer of gold or silver colored paint. He also has a cave room full of magic items. Yet again all of the enchanted things there are worthless, unless you want a large staff that can cast one light spell. Even though that red dragon has half of his horde worthless items, the blue dragons still respect him. Since the few thieves that manage to escape the dragon's wraith discover that they risked their lives for the same amount of wealth a beggar could get in half the time."
"The metallic dragons that are the do gooders still have a horde of treasure, just that their treasure trove does not represent sheer power like the chromatics but instead the opposite. Their treasure represents things like the rewards from how many people they have helped or how many evil beings were slaughtered and looted from. Some metallic dragons get paid to just live near a area while the chromatics demand a payment instead. I heard a rumor that some ancient gold dragons have a huge hidden horde they received from the royalty they protected before their kingdom fell."
"As for the stuff found in the hordes that are not coins or magic, well those could be included for different reasons. The dragon could think something like several bronze weapons are worth showing off to prove the goblins they have killed to get a cave or dragons could have mistaken a cook book for a alchemic or magic tome and shows that off. Although the young green dragon who does that has not gotten laughed at by his servants, since they enjoy the recipes in the book."
"Now as for the dragoness who I was a slave of... she only kept the coins and gems. Since the magic things were placed in a pile to give as rewards to those who do her bidding out of the territory. When she gets the not magic items, she just lets her kobolds have them. We just refitted the armor and smelted the weapons to fit us or just used those parts to make traps."
"Bottom line of dragons and treasures. The horde has started because some like to have pretty collections, because it shows off their favorite qualities like how many good or evil deeds they have done. Besides dragons are like us and some just get greedy and want to have gold for the sake of having something of value that others will be jealous of."
"Hmmm.... I think I am missing something that is related to this topic. Oh another way for dragons to gain treasure that is not well known. Trading minions to help build a lair and control a territory. Young dragons who are looking to find themselves a place to call home need help and if they do not have any minions from their parents then they will buy some from another dragon who has too enough to spare. The price of the minion depends on the region they live in. If a dragon needs brute strength for defense in a tough area like a swamp they could buy some lizardfolk. If a dragon needs to gain some territory fast in a mountainous region then they could buy some goblins. Although I pride myself in saying that kobolds are the best minions of a dragon since the scale color that we share with a dragon shows we can thrive in the same area. Oh, also if even a elder dragon's forces are defeated, a large chunk of his horde goes to replenishing his minions. Which is why it is difficult to get rid of a elder even after years of fighting."
