Art by Desiree Lee (Jim Hardiman)
skunkworks
Last month we all got the sad news that Skunkworks artist Jim Hardiman had passed away.
In a kind of spooky coincidence, 2 days after I found out I received a package in my PO Box and inside was a sketchbook that I had asked Jim to do a piece in the last time I met him at a con. Since it had been about 5 years since I had done this I figured it had been lost so it was nice to get it back since inside was another pic from a friend who had passed away. Jim had given the book to a friend of his with instructions to see that it got back to me. But Jim had never been able to do the piece in it due to health problems.
This was an earlier piece he had done in the book under his other art ID.
So again, R.I.P. Jim
And thanks.

Desiree Lee was not an alias. That is an internet rumor.

Her real name wasn't even "Desiree". It was Denise.

Jim himself told me that the rumors about him making Desiree are false and I have spoken to other artists
who tell me she is in fact a real person. For example:
"First time I met her in person was when I went down to visit Jim in 97. We surprised her by showing up unannounced and making her think that I'd published her address in the artist plug section of Skunk Aficionado - my first sketchbook piece from her came thanks to us baiting her about not being able to draw as cute as Joe Rosales."
"She'd slid out of fandom due to the fact that she actually had a professional job as an artist and was overly paranoid about getting black listed due to someone in her industry finding out about her art. One example she shared with me was shortly after a new issue of SA had come out and her boss came storming into her office waving what looked suspiciously like said issue and screaming "WTF does she think she's doing putting out crap like this" and pretty much reading her the riot act. She thought she was finished and was getting ready to start cleaning out her desk when the boss finally threw the offending item onto her desk for her to view. Turned out that it wasn't SA, instead, it was the final rough layout of a magazine and the printing dept had accidentally used her rough sketch instead of her final illustration and the boss thought the rough one was her final one. She got back in his face and proved she'd done her job properly but she was borderline heart attack at the thought of what if that actually had been her art. That and a few other false alarms that scared her stupid combined with her growing disdain for the fandom in general pretty much shut her down."
"There's two decades of personal story between her and Jim that reads like a Lifetime miniseries but that's personal."

Besides as you can see in the link I provided there is a photo of her. Notice how her hair style is very similar to the drawings Jim made of her? Yeah. Its not just some picture taken from Facebook. I was the one who posted that image. I am so sick of these fucking rumors. The man is dead. Stop smearing his reputation.
