Well, that was meant to be the extinction meteorite scheduled to wipe out the dinosaurs. Instead, it shatters the moon, throwing the tidal cycle into chaos. The magnetic poles of the planet switch. Floods and tsunamis become common, and the floodplains of Africa where mankind is due to develop becomes a mangrove swamp. Primates stay up in the trees, and sentient mammals do not develop for a few more millennia.
