Grow Selection Technique For Line Work - tutorial part 1
So another little mini tut (eye candy provided by old art of Amy role playing) – thought i might show how i did the bodice and laces and stuff on the last post “Anticipation”. This is a fairly common practice, but in case any you haven't picked it up before here it is:
Pic 1: so you have some line art you want to edit – in this case adding some straps and ribbons-thingies.A :put a layer above the line art (set to “multiply”) and flood fill it with dark grey (or some dark colour if you wish). B: make another layer (above the grey) set to “normal” and paint your staps, laces etc. Here i used Krita's straight line tool with the brush size sensitivity turned off, but you might you whatever works best in your software, point to point, etc. For the ribbon-thingies i used Krita's weighted brush tool for nice smooth curves
Pic 2: A:On the Selection tab drop down choose “Select Opaque” - that will select all the white areas on the level you just painted. B: Again from the Section menu choose “Grow Selection” - here i set the selection to grow by 5 pixels all around – the amount will depend on the line width you want.
Pic 3 Create a layer below the white lines and flood fill (bucket tool) the selection with black (or whatever colour lines you want). - Here, depending on the programme you're using and the settings on your flood tool the outline might be too soft, just right, or too pixelated-jaggy – fo fix this either “feather” the selecion a couple pixels or play with the flood tool's setting – e.g., in Krita one touch of the bucket usually gives a nice line, but sometimes too soft, so a 2nd touch with the tool might help, too much though and it get's jaggy.
Pic 4: A. Merge your white and black layers. B. Erase the parts you don't want , and C. turn off or delete your grey layer. (Then you can merge all the line work together if you want, colour, etc...)

(BTW, just using this drawing as an example - final version of this pic does not have these added elements, etc)...
