Yinglets just suddenly appeared about 138 years ago, according to http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13352611/. Or maybe a little longer; there's no telling how old that paper is, after all.
More like it's an uplift from some mystical rock.
Similar to this only a bit flashier.

If yinglets received a monolith uplift, it would be a little more like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv2FYEeHVRY
This was the side of transformation as topic, that I've been hoping for in so many comics and written stories. I think this is a major part of why I liked this comic in particular, relative to others that just focus on the more blatant and generic aspects, that eventually, get ignored or forgotten about later on.
Note that being a noble has a historical precedent of making people put strange things on their heads.

Fancy hats do make all the difference. How else could this guy have gotten away with so much? http://imgur.com/J6XwOfx
I have a book, An Incomplete Education, that mentions this guy's "questionable taste in hats":

Viracroix has a habit of making anything he says sound like a teacher addressing his students.
...And yes, now we see where this is all going! I've been waiting forever to get to this reveal so that the readers and I are all on the same page.
...Except for all that other stuff I haven't revealed.

Re-reading this for funsies. :3 On the subject of instincts, I've seen videos of humans jumping out of the way like a scared little bunny when a tarantula runs towards them. I don't mean every-day people I mean like Bob the Tarantula Guy whose youtube channel consists entirely of tarantula videos, who owns 1,000 tarantulas, whose entire identity is "I like tarantulas" - JUMP when a non-venomous spider smaller than his fist that he could easily kill by accident runs in his general direction.
Humans don't like to admit it, but we have some pretty deep-seated instincts that are very difficult if not impossible to resist.
Of course, given that this is a pre-Renaissance type of society, even countenancing that humans could react purely on instinct in certain situations is not really something that's going to happen.
