I idid this in reply to a call by Jed Martinez to celebrate the 100th. issue of Rowrbrazzle. I was a member from the beginning, but dropped out in the 30's, quite a number of years ago. Nevertheless I contributed to the 50th. and 75th. issue anniversary one-shots. This time I made it clear it was the last time, short of 'Brazzle reacing the 1,000th. issue. That *might* persuade me. Otherwise, I'm just a burned out old member who really doesn't feel all that much connection to an apa I haven't been a member of for more than 15 years. All the worse that the art will likely be shot down to quarter page size...
The drawing is entirel pencil, using Photoshop to clean up faint unwanted lines, spots, and the like. Even so, this much trouble for so little reason is plain nuts... so I intend to erease the message balloon and finish the piece for some other, more public use as well. I might even ink and digitally colour, although if I can skip inking I will.
If curious about previous stages in this drawing can be found on my scraps page, at:

In case you haven't guessed, the scene is Mars, a scarp and collapsed subsurface drainage channel, somewhere in mid-latitudes, late afternoon. Saara doesn't need a space suit of any kind, but Tangel' in the background needs a full-length "force field" suit to keep from simultaneously freezing and suffocating. Further in the background lurks the shadowy figure of the artist...

I spent a little time most days over a couple of weeks I guess. But I had sketched all the detail in softy in one session as I recall. Once you develop a feel for this sort of detail, it can go amazingly fast. Now things like Garfield coffee mugs, combs, cell phones, TV remotes, donut boxes, scattered DVD containers, desk lamps, burrito wrappers... *that* sort of detail takes time. One rock looks much like another rock, and if you don't get it quite right, who'll know?
Actually, it isnt' quite that simple. You have to have some idea what sort of rocks they are, and what's shaped them, or you end up with volcanic glass sitting next to a slab of sandstone, one weathered by fracturing and the other by wind, and no geologist would buy it. But if you have a feel for geology you can put the right sort of rocks into the picture without too much thought. In this case, it's a composite of thousands of photos I've seen from the Opportunity and Spirit landers on Mars.

As this won't occur for another two and a half centuries, I won't hold my breath - I'll just let whoever happens to be O.E. get in touch with you then ;P . As you haven't been a member for so long, you shouldn't have to be bothered like this, though. We'll just get our Taral fix by coming here like everyone else.
Your cover art for #93 was nice.

I'd be a little happier if Jed had send a thank you when I e-mailed the file, but I guess he's too busy wheedling more contribs from people.
You should have heard Schirm's reaction to finding out I was doing this -- "that thing? Nobody's contributing to Jed's cockamany one-shot!" Or words to that effect. He seems to have even less sentimental attachment to Brazzle than I do.

Such being the case, I hope you'll accept my Thank You in place of his. (sets off a huge fireworks display)
I really don't Schirm all that well, only met him that one time during the Karno: The Other White Meat episode at Anthrocon, and have had little communication with him otherwise (the Fred Patten to Worldcon program, for one). Since he doesn't have to participate (send in stuff), and doesn't even have to send in money to cover postage, there isn't much call for me to knock heads with him. Do I even have his phone number? Possibly, but I've never called him.
Meanwhile, the last I heard from him, Jed's only got ~20 entries, though he has the rest of the year. I haven't even started on doing one myself. We'll see what I can do during MFM.

Jed may have gone to that well one or two times too many. Is this the third or fourth commemorative one-shot he's done? It might have been better to just wait for the 100th, and made a real blast out of it. But after approaching the same artists two, three, or four times, they can be forgiven for being a little less enthusiastic each time, I think. Especially if they aren't members...
Schrim still gets 'Brazzle as its founder, huh? Given how he seemed to feel about it, I'm a wee bit surprised he hasn't phoned the OE and said to not send it and save the postage. Maybe he's not as uninterested as he made it sound.

That's OK, Trivialink. Take your time in creating something for me. You can send it well after "Rowrbrazzle" #99 has been published and distributed in late October.
'Hurricane Season 2008' might be a factor in the lack of images I've been expecting, since several 'Brazzlers live within the path of many of these intense storms...

I haven't forgotten to thank you. As you have implied, my unusual work schedule (as a janitor) - among other preoccupations - has kept me from responding to a variety of other contributors to my project...
Thank you for your submission, Saara. I'll make sure you get your copy of the completed work in the mail early next year...
And, as a personal request, tell Schirm that I'm going to get this project completed - come Hell or high water - even if I have to enlist the talents of as many folks in "Fur Affinity" (many of whom probably never even heard of "Rowrbrazzle") as possible! Also, tell him that I wouldn't accept a contrib from him now, even if HE paid me to have it published!

I wastn't too put out, really. But when you don't have much contact except through e-mail and fanzines, little gestures are all there is to fandom. If I don't get feedback then there's not much difference between something getting published and just burning it the minute you finish the drawing.
And... Aw.. you know Schirm. Always a hard word for anyone.
Seriously, he's a crab but I love him anyway. I don't know what the root of his feelings about Rowrbrazzle are, but I suspect they go way back. He was ambivalent about giving up being OE, and was highly critical of Fred's handling of the apa, blaming most of its ills (in his mind) on Fred being too bureacratic, Fred letting in the wrong sort, Fred not making allowances to keep old members, etc. Since then nothing Brazzle can do could please him. Yet if he didn't get his "founder's" copy he'd probably be in a huff and have even worse things to say. I'd just forget what he said. I'm certainly not passes on what you said... It would just guarantee trouble.
