Before the tyrannical reign of CLU, in the time of Kevin Flynn, the games was a careless pastime, an after work activity amongst friends. Disk Battles had safety gear, Light Cycles often deactivated the bike when they hit a wall and the worst a program would receive was a bruised shoulder and a laugh at their expense. Now, now that CLU has come in, the games represent horror. Most programs these microcycles have been hiding as they watch the Red Guard take programs off the streets aboard recognizers. Some of their friends have been deemed “corrupted” and sentenced to the games for the entertainment of CLU and his subordinates. Now the games are just gladiatorial competitions where the only rule is to survive as long as one can, for however long they can. Friends have been forced to fight one another with the threat of Deresolution. What ended with laughter amongst friends would now ends in bitter tears as they held up the pieces that had once been their friends before they vanished, the only thing that remained of them was their disk…that is until it is taken to be wiped clean for distribution to stray programs who will also be lead as sheep to the slaugther. It is often preferable when given the opportunity that friendships can remain in the Light Cycle grid where for just a while longer, friends can fight alongside one another as friends against CLU’s Elite. In most cases, friends often die together as the light ribbons and cycles causes them to die in a brilliant flash as they crash. For others is the more ruthless method of being cut with an opponent’s disk as they drive by. Such is the fate of these revolutionaries and martyrs seeking a free system where all access would be once again free and open to all programs and perhaps to once again see their user, their creator, Kevin Flynn.
