That's an extremely difficult way to open a can without absolutely destroying it. Not to mention the amount of dulling your knife would experience.
It's so much easier to find a flat rock, rub the top of the can until you file through the crimp, and squeeze the sides and the top just pops off.
Or you could just remember to bring a can opener.
