Like I said in a previous strip. The creature has already assimilated into them, however, in it's haste to reunify into it's original state, they were disregarded. Add in the fact the creature was totally nullified briefly by the artifact and it seems that these two retain all their original characteristics while being unaware of the entity that they are. This place in each of their minds, now merging together, appears as some cherished memory which affirms identity; a memory which is slowly being eroded by the vast, alien consciousness around them. Likely the two will become indistinguishable and the entity will properly remember itself and being a rampage of consumption and assimilation.
