depends on what you wish to do. Poser is very limited in its ability to scratch build models and is mainly used for tweakable prefabs. I like calling it virtual 3d paper dolls or Barbie.
The programs I see most used by others in creating characters or effects are Maya, Lightwave, and 3dmax. Each one of them has a very steep price tag and learning curve, not to mention requires a pretty updated machine. But they produce movie quality imagery. I've been on forums watching the WIPs and seen how long it take to produce a quality model. Ranges from a few hours to a few months.
3 free programs that would give you a taste are
"Anim8or" used for building a model
"UVmapper" used for creating a texture map for your model that you would paint.
"DazStudio" Simular to what I use but free.
you can find these using google to search they are all free.

If I may add, the Wings 3d is another awesome modelling program and it's totally free. It's worth to check out. Here's the website http://www.wings3d.com/
Wowwie Wow Wow. I think this is some of the best fur you've ever rendered. There is a lot of subtlety in it. Are those spots partly transparent?
Costuming and props is done very well too, and her expression on the big pose is incredibly cute.
The only thing that throws me off a little is that tail. Seems a little too rope-like.
Y'know, I think your lighting technique is improving too.
Thanks for sharing dude.

Thank you RatSmith and you are welcome :)
the spots are slightly lighter than black to allow everyone to see a fur texture instead of a flat black spot. LitteDragon allowed me to basically chop clone and paste his Furrette 2 base texture map onto this mesh. The costume was created by Avery Soul, an excellent mesh set. I didn't do any touchup and I forgot to brush out her tail. I might switch from the bushy tail that she is using to LittleDragons Furrette tail. The Lighting, I have 4 lights, one casting shadow and 3 providing filler to lighten up the dark spots just enough to make things out.
