Multimillion dollar tools,
Can be wrecked by hapless fools,
Who treat them like a black box,
Or stupidly override the safety locks -
And the number I times I've hate to state,
"You turned this into a two tone paper weight,"
is enough to to make me groan.
So when it comes to our day-to-day,
I'm very careful with what I say -
When I instruct newcomers to their tasks;
Reminding them to wipe their counters, clean their flasks,
Replace their gloves and keep their goggles on,
That when I say wash with base I don't mean Dawn ™ ,
and for god sakes put down your phone.
Because precision is what you make of it;
But sloppy chemists make curves fit,
and explain anomalies by dropping data points -
and complain when their devices rust at joints -
when all along they could wipe clean,
the scum and gum and filth from the machine,
but instead they condone,
Foul filth and slime and grime,
And cannot spare a second of their time,
to ensure precision instruments remain precise -
that their beakers look clean and nice,
that their blades keep sharp, and slice,
without rendering a specimen a sacrifice,
and making their PI moan,
