I don't know the specific reasons for building your bunker, but one of the things I prefer to do is not worry about what's waiting right outside my door.
For me this means constructing barriers and lighting to "control" enough of the area around my building exit(s) that I won't have hostile mobs spawning or wandering in. Here's an extreme example: LINK
