Native to Europe and Northern Africa, the European Goldfinch is known for its melodic song, imitated even by Vivaldi in “Il Gardellino”. They are often kept as a pet, and have been crossbred with Canaries in order to create a hybrid with a beautiful song. Because of their appetite for thistle seeds, they are associated with Christ’s Passion in renaissance Christian symbolism.
