That was one of the nicknames the crews gave their beloved Boeing B-17 Fortreses.
Last week the Collings Foundation's Wings of Freedom Tour visited Hagerstown Regional Airport (Hagerstown was once the HQ for Fairchild Aircraft Co.)
WOF flew this Boeing B17G "Nine O Nine" in. I count myself lucky, as I think less than a dozen of these amazing craft (that were crewed by equally amazing WW2 airmen) are left flying. I've seen six of them. Of all the classic 1940's military craft, the B-17 is my favorite!
I took lots of pics. More of them later...its past my bedtime tonite!

indeed ( Velantian has a great pic of her) but I had intended to mean in general ' any large amount of aluminum flying over your head' rather than a specific named aircraft
and you are quite correct, an Al overcast like that would be....mortal. especially if 'FiFi' joined them. just the sound from that would open the earth!

Aluminum Overcast flew over my house repeatedly on Labor Day weekend. Alas, my pictures didn't really come out, but I do have a few others: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6056666/
