Had a dog hat managed to eat a whole bag of milk chocolate and various other candy. The bugger smirked it off and still lived until old age.

Milk chocolate is the safest. It contains the least amount of theobromine, and if the dog is big enough, the dog can sneak through without too many issues. But a small dog with dark baking chocolate would be a problem.

Most Halloween candies are made of chocolate. Chocolate contains a chemical compound called theobromine. While the amount of theobromine in chocolate is fairly safe for human consumption (we metabolize it very fast), even small amounts can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. As levels increase, side effects can lead to hyperactivity, tremors, high blood pressure, a rapid heart rate, seizures, respiratory failure, and cardiac arrest. It's not surprising that canine poisonings rise alarmingly at this time of the year as family pets get into Halloween candies.
