Dirt gets a JORB...perhaps.
In Australia, we have this amazing thing (read my sarcasm) where people under a certain age are usually paid much less than us older folk.
For small, “very normal” jobs. Most of the people running these businesses will take advantage of this happy fact and, pretty much only hire kids for cheap (and often fire them soon as they reach adult wage).
Every...single call, they have asked how old I am before anything else. This has been my life for the last few days.
Yayyy.

Yuuuuup. I forgot how bad it was, as I worked as freelance for years and then industry work where that honestly wasn't even a thing looked at. Before I worked freelance and went "over age", I literally managed to land 3 jobs in the week I applied <___> Now I cant get one shitty casual one it seems!
Used to work for an employement agency and oh man.... Shady stuff like that went down all the time. Various corporations asking for age or other things that are by law illegal but if we reported it then every single corporate account we had would have been closed and no one hired anyways. Blaaaaaaaaaaaarg.
Doesn't matter. They can usually get a ballpark figure about how old you are from your resume or when you graduated. And if you lie, if you get an interview and don't look 10 or 20 years younger, you're still screwed. All employers want here are kids right out of college, who will work cheap, for very long hours, and don't have pesky family obligations.
Ohhh, I didn't even think about this issue. With the whole minimum wage thing in the US, I thought it would be silly to pay kids (you can get working papers at 14) who still are dependents, inexperianced, and don't need a living wage, enough to live on. I was thinking it would disuade places from highering inexpeperianced young workers because of the amount they would have to be payed (lets be honest, a high school kid, working at mcdonalds and living at home does not need to be making 15 an hour, imho. Someone with a family to support does though).
But I never even though what would happen to older people looking for unskilled jobs. In the US age is not alowed to be a factor, but we all know it is even now, and would be worse with something like that. I am sorry to hear it is that way there and people can't be good humans and be willing to spend a bit more.

It's so sad to see the snakes exist outside of the United States. The world can never grow if corporations, small and large, continue to prefer giving their employees smaller checks in favor or giving vastly more experienced employees more.
What's really stupid is the fact they are losing money over this. Rather than having a long term, well trained employee, they are creating unnecessary tturnovers. Time in training is time lost in having the newly hired fo their job. Time lost by waiting for a completion of training is money lost.
Seems to me they've got their short term goggles on.

In U.S I have similar problem of a different sort. 27 without any big job qualifications, tends to make them think I was lazy or something. =C Finally got into a Mcdonalds that preeettty much hires everyone of all ages finally. Also had to find one that actually cares about customer service enough to pick me up. Best of luck getting over that hurdle.
Have you had any run-ins with employment consultants who outright lie about jobs that do not even exist?
You also have another factor, see Australian's are lazy asses, some will only hire a person who has 'recent experience' i.e. someone who wants to work else where.
Well here is the thing, see employers will not admit to only wanting to hire young people and I have seen kids who much be under 18 working in some shops, so if people out there defend the right to choose to hire younger people only, and its not because of pay, could it be because they are pedophiles?
I have fourteen years experience being professionally unemployed and its still driving me utterly nuts.

Wow... that sucks of injustice
I can only talk from a UK perspective but I know how much it sucks. job hunting is the most singular depressing exercise you do. as my mum said for every 1000 jobs you apply for 1 might come back to you and for every 100 that come back to you 1 might give you an interview etc.., really sucks balls.

I went through something similar very recently, but managed to land a job via a recruitment agency. It sucks to be tethered to an agency, but it may help you get your foot in the door to have someone speak on your behalf. After nearly 5 years of job hunting, I've finally gotten out of retail and into a full-time job this way. Definitely worth the try.
