So it's been four years since I last came up with a Halloween picture, http://www.furaffinity.net/full/4712202/ , and if it hadn't been for my good friend YoshiMan1118 offering up seasonal points commissions for his "Spooktacular Commission Sale", it probably would have been even longer before another iteration would spring up from me.
Although, this is an idea I had for Reign for Halloween the following year but never put it into action. This year seemed like the perfect opportunity to use it, so I went for it. Following in the footsteps of the "board" theme started back in 2009 with http://www.furaffinity.net/full/2960411/ (hoverboard) and 2010's (skateboard), Reign lives to ride again and hangs ten with...a surfboard. The inspiration for Reign's shirt came from his previous skater getup with the Dark Chao design. This year, the undershirt's design translated into an outer open shirt that I whipped up on the spot: http://oi62.tinypic.com/2pq4bxt.jpg . His surfboard is inspired by Gengar from Pokémon; him and Gengar one might say have a bit of history together: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/4224099/ . The symbol in the middle of the surfboard is the Psychic elemental symbol in the world of Pokémon. I'm well aware Gengar is not a psychic-type, but he can learn at least one psychic-type move and Reign possesses limited psychic abilities himself so it fit. That diamond on the end of the surfboard? That's Gengarite, the Mega Stone needed by Gengar to Mega Evolve. Just seemed like a neat touch to add.
The background of this draws inspiration from the previous Halloween installment; it isn't quite as good as the old background was but I did my best to match it up closely in theme with the surfer motif going on. Has an ocean/universe-type hybrid approach to it as far as visuals go, so that was sort of cool to work with...and it was the only thing I could think of for a background in any case. :P
Like his skater getup of 2010's, this surfer getup could also function as an alternative outfit for Reign I suppose for when the time calls for it.
Special thanks to Lina01 for digitally outlining my original sketch; made for finishing this in time much easier thanks to her awesome help. :) Spent most of the month working on this so her contribution is most appreciated.
Don't have much else to add here, 'cept...hope ya like it. :b
And of course...Happy Halloween!

Happy (belated) Halloween, mister Bowser!
I had some technical difficulties over here (internet net-connection errors) so I sadly missed out on being here on the proper date...
Anyhow! May I say, that whilst I am not all too familiar, with the Sonic universe; its characters, designs, aesthetics, etcetera, this fellow - Reign, as you call him - he's pretty, well, fanciful to behold! Cute, too~
Splendid use of vivid, striking colors, that really catches the eyes (even in the mere thumbnail), and looking at it real close (downloaded), it is evident, how much great detailings were put into so. Having read your written words (description), you pin-pointed a lot of details, that I myself would have gone amiss of, and gone-by unnoticed - I'm therefore hence impressed, over how much you managed to sneak into a single piece of art, in terms of, ah... "easter eggs"? ... would that be a sufficient word, suiting this occasion?

Thanks, same to you. :)
No worries, I'm just glad I myself got this out on the right date. Now that would have been a bit awkward, haha.
Hah, yeah, Reign is certainly of the imaginative type. Lots of accessories and whatnot. Doesn't seem to enjoy wearing many other different types of clothes rather than variants of his usual wardrobe, which usually includes an open shirt, hah. Guess that's why he opted to be a surfer this year.
Glad you enjoyed this though, and the description is certainly appreciated too. And I suppose that's a suitable term, in a sense. It's a bit of a throwback to my own picture of the same theme from 2010, so I guess I'd be one of the only few to really "get" or "understand" the significance of said references. It's really only the approach to background, choice of design on the shirt, and the choice of costume as a whole (with the "board" thing going on) that are the real referenced throwbacks.

Ahh - open shirt[s], flappin' in the breeze... Is it Rickanovas rubbin' off on you, or you rubbin' yerself onto him? (God DAMN, that came off unneededly suggestive! *laughs*)
I do not mind you making references to works of old, as you clearly lets us in on the jokes(?), or context to so - personally speaking, I appreciate those small touches, as they make it even more personal, and gives it a greater personality, on the whole (the art). Plus, it gives me an further excuse, to revisit your older works. ;)
May I also add, in saying, that I really like how well your create these elaborate, accompanying backgrounds/ backdrops, as they are quite lush, fit the image[s] as a whole, and overall, can be pretty gorgeous and stylish. As a man of a ill 'n' lazy habit, in making no backgrounds at all, in my art, I bow down to you, good sir!

I've had my characters wear attire like that for a good while, before I met him, so just something I've had going on myself, haha. But yep, open shirts in the breeze--it's fun to incorporate motion and a sense of freedom into my drawings. xP
That's what it usually boils down to. I'm not quite popular enough to have any references of my own be remembered by many so I usually go ahead and point the references out. Whether or not they're appreciated by the individual viewer or not, is up to their own discretion.
Believe me, backgrounds are far from my strongest suit, haha. I like making actual scenery but sometimes you have days where surrealistic backgrounds like this seem to be enough to get the job done. Glad you like them nonetheless. :p

I do, like so a lot (your backgrounds), although, I have to ask...
I myself, tend to skimp out, or skip entirely, on incorporating and working on backdrops and backgrounds - partly out of laziness, but also because I, at least in my case, in my art, feels that they muddle the focus, and distracts the eye, from focusing on the being (or beings) at hand, and in front.
... Ah - does so make sense?
I know I am mostly making excuses, towards the fact of me bein' a lazy bum, b u t I do feel, there is some truth to my views...

It can, yeah, depending on what you're going for. Some people are all about simplicity and have the chops to pull it off when their style becomes the main draw.
As for me, I've tried it myself before with digital works especially on a blank or even transparent background with a drop shadow integrated into it, and I just never feel satisfied with the results. I always feel a background for such hefty undertakings is essential to bring out the best in the intended theme the subject is partaking in.

Do you think, there's a difference in creating so (backgrounds), when digitally, compared to traditionally?
To me, traditionally speaking, is just s o, nay t o o exhausting, and it demands more energy, that I have to potential to muster up for the cause. I can not simply fill a space with an inky blackness, as that void, needs to be painstakingly, wearily crafted onto the piece, line by line, and believe me, I've done so in the past, and it was just... awful - not the results, mind you, but just the effort it took, and what time it stole from me in the making.
Of course, even such a "trauma", I wouldn't dare to say, would stop me, if I r e a l l y felt like adding a background, would help the picture on the whole - if it feels "incomplete", or "empty", without so, then surely, I'd draw and add so by hand, even if it'd be a pain, because, well... it's for the art of the art, you know?

Well with most digital means, it's easier because you usually have the ability to undo a mistake and reshape the elements of your canvas to your liking. Of course, going digital with backgrounds can also bring the risk traditional mediums bring with them, in the form of being unable to change much to it if anything at all, if your program freezes in the midst of your progress. You can be forced to stick with what you've already done when working traditionally, unless you're of someone of Bob Ross' caliber, who always referred to mistakes as 'happy accidents' and demonstrated how easy it seemed to change an element into something else intended.
In the end, art is up to the artist and what he or she feels works best for them. Are there any right or wrong ways to do things in the world of art? Sometimes, and sometimes not. All up to the eye of the beholder.
