Pidge the Barmaid - Gluten
This happens sometimes. We're a pretty hippie bar. We have nothing with nuts, vegan options, gluten free options, but these people make no sense to me.

That's what upsets me :(
I recently went to a TGI Fridays (there's very few of them in the UK) & asked what milkshakes they had. She told me they offered a Snickers milkshake so I asked for it & she went to go check they had it in. Then came back & told me 'Oh we don't do Snickers any more because of nut allergies'.
Like, WTF? That's not fair to any one who LOVES NUTS & has to go without u_u
I can understand if they warn on a menu that something has NUTS in it, but to completely take away ANYTHING with nuts in coz of a small minority of people who suffer with the allergy...well its just not on D:
I mean come on...
Why can't they just prepare nut dishes & drinks AWAY from the ordinary prep area for other meals or something? Its just way OTT if you ask me.

I imagine when you're dealing with something like milkshakes when you have one machine that serves several types, it becomes impractical to prevent cross-contamination without training your staff to handle the containers like they're full of anthrax spores. You'd be asking them to have an entire machine just for serving Snickers milkshakes which could never be used for anything else.
It has nothing to do with health.
Do you know what gluten is? Because I bet they don't. They don't know the 'side effects' 'correlation' or even what good it does for the body. It's called a 'buzzword.' Or you might call it trendy, or hipster crap. I just call it stupid, because they're basically saying "I have no f-ing clue what I'm putting in my body nor do I really care. Take that 30$ roast chicken breast and turn it into chicken nuggets because that's what I see my friends instagraming."

If you have a gluten allergy, you are going to avoid it like crazy...
Hell, I have friend who is allergic to nuts, gluten, lactose/dairy, vinegar, etc...
So she will call in advance to see if a place cooks anything to her specifications, just to save the hassle of going there and ending up only ordering water.
People just make no sense...

thankfully we're such a small business that I CAN go to the chef and hand him the card XD but I was glad he was so patient. we make everything on site from scratch but he had to tell the lady that everything on her card was within three feet of her food in the kitchen

I honestly think most of these allergies are from all the scientifically "improved" foods...
And people's fricken heads...
Like, I know some are legit.
As a child I couldn't drink whole milk.
I couldn't tell what was while and what was not... I used to love milk...
But when I took a drink of whole milk, I am suddenly vomiting. My dad claimed it was in my head, forced me to drink whole milk, and thus my love of milk went away, hate it now cause it just equals out to vomit in my head.
But then I know someone else who claims to be allergic to mushrooms -coughmyhusbandcough-
He'll fake cough/choke up/etc...
But then I'll see him eatting tuna noodle casserole, and he is fine eating it (despite the fact its made with cream of mushroom soup)
Because having a food allergy is soooo trendy...
People are like "Oh, I have it" cause of the hysteria associated with it.
Glutten, nuts, dairy, meat, etc...
Cause its the thing right now.
Sorry, back in elementary school, people weren't passing out and dying left and right while 75%+ of us ate our pbj sandwiches.
Now schools are banning pbj (which I find to be bullshit, cause its a cheap yet healthy food that is great for kids, especially those in low income families).
So why is it happening now?

Actually allergies are genetic and due to lack of exposure. Like kids who never were exposed to things as kids have over-active immune systems that make them develop a lot of respiratory allergies. Food allergies are genetic, as far as I'm aware. Like you can't suddenly develop a food allergy as an adult like you could a respiratory one.
But yeah, a lot of people treating very serious allergies and diseases as "trendy", it's like how back a few years ago everyone claimed to be bipolar and ADHD with no doctor's diagnosis.

Thing is, I've seen tons of food allergies develop out of no where in adults...
Before the gluten thing ever became famous, my uncle went from eating pasta and bread as staples to suddenly getting sick and finding out he had a gluten allergy (which was hard on him, because at that time, nothing was marked gluten free and if it was hard to find and super expensive.)
Outside of that, my mom, friend I mentioned earlier, etc... all adults with no allergies.
That friend only found out some of her allergies in that last 3 years,
Watched her myself break out out of no where eating a giant dill pickle, then found out the vinegar caused it.
So I don't fully believe the "exposure" bit, because I've seen people exposed to all sorts of stuff and develope the allergy and those not exposed who have no allergy.

Well I've heard allergies can appear out of nowhere for some people, like a person who's owned cats their entire lives suddenly developing an allergy to them and breaking out in hives. So I don't think "science" is to blame (the GMO fear-mongering should be taken with a grain of salt, since they are basically lumping selective breeding in with it and claiming things have hormones injected in them when it's just because people took the biggest of different crops and kept breeding them together until it became normal).
While that is true for some...
Hormone injections are not a myth.
People wanted bigger beef/pork/poultry/etc.. So they used hormones.
Some are still used because they are legal and not considered unhealthy or illegal, and also not something they have to report.
Same with plants.
Their has been cross pollination, contained pollen breeding, etc..
And then there has been genetic splicing to increase nutritional benefits and also place some in them that haven't been there before (such as Beta carotene in rice)...
In the mad rush to "end world hunger" and making foods better then what they were, foods have been heavily modified in natural and unnatural ways.
This would affect our diets, because while some of these food allergies have been around for years, they were never in such an astounding numbers.
Altering our food sources has changed how we would usually be affected by them thus causing reactions, in this case in the forms of allergies.
If you don't believe me on this, please go around to farms.
While some are hesitant to tell you because people want to jump on them for it, they will tell you this is true.

That's the thing though, the people who are so focused on it and anti-science in food tend to not even think about the fact that it's to keep people from going hungry, instead they want to act like there's mad scientists hiding in the background, rubbing their hands together and cackling. Most of the changes to food have been the inclusion of things that are already present in nature (like taking things from peppers and injecting it in corn to keep away bugs without relying on chemical pesticides), hormones (hormones are natural, I don't know why people are acting like it's the same as someone pouring succinylcholine into food), or selective-breeding to naturally produce larger yields.
Odds are a lot of these same people smoke cigarettes (which actually have things like ammonia and cyanide in them) and own purebred Yorkies (selective breeding).

and I never denied this (the benefits of the science).
But since its a science and not an exact art yet, there are errors.
And I think food allergies in increasing numbers is one of them.
Do I think learning how to improve this and that is wrong?
Nope, but I do think some of it is done too fast and without knowing all the errors that happen, and we are left with the string of nut, gluten, dairy, etc... allergies.
Which then limits food people can eat and creates a whole new set of issues.

There's probably a couple of factors:
*Common food allergies are no longer lethal and mysterious. This means a larger portion of the population have them, and that more severe forms are survivable.
*Greater diversity of diet means we're more likely to be exposed to a specific allergen than our ancestors. For example, someone living in 8th century Norway probably wouldn't need to worry overmuch about their lethal allergy to peanuts.
Saying the allergen must cause the allergy is a logical fallacy called post hoc: it's like saying a delivery room must be the cause of babies.

No, it's much simpler. If someone had a food allergy before the advent of modern science nobody would have known what the hell was wrong with them and they would have died in due course from a combination of the allergy and shit attempts at curing them with leeches and hemlock. Bam, god didn't will it, better luck next kid.
Does it not occur to you that GM foods are the only crops that go through any form of safety testing at all?
Does it not occur to you that GM foods are the only crops that go through any form of safety testing at all?
No, no other crops are subject to controlled testing. At all. It's only required for GM crops.
There are more allergies because they're genetic. If a genetic condition is no longer killing people before they can reproduce, you get more of it. So the better medicine gets, the more sickly the population will apparently be.
The trick is to remember a hundred years ago these people would all have been dead, not healthy.

I used to be super allergic to peanuts and citrus when I was little and it has slowly faded away.
Like, if I ate a Reese's I would break out in tiny red itchy bumps.
Then I my skin would turn grey and puffy and hard. My mom called me an elephant. ._.
But like now I can eat a whole Reese's and be fine. If I eat like four I get hot and a little itchy but nothing bad.

Oh, I understand diabetes... if type 1.
But those people generally don't have Diabetes (assuming type 1), they may have type 2, and that whole set up makes no sense at all....
And its generally not ordered by those who have it.
-worked drive thru for a number of years and got to know my customers-
They just did it to be "healthy"
Which made no sense because of their food order.

thats actually a myth, i'm diabetic and i've heard the stories about how diet soda is supposed to make you crave sugar more, i drink diet soda a lot since i can't drink sugary things and i actually crave sugars less than i used to. i actually CAN'T drink the sugary sodas anymore, they have a heavy syrupy texture/taste to them that just turns me off.

I...wasn't talking about that at all. o.o I was talking about recent studies that have linked diet soda to increased risk of health problems in general.

In other words, you are far better off just drinking actual soda and exercising than replacing it with diet soda. Your body is meant to process real sugar (yes, that includes corn syrup), not sugar substitutes.

Because after going sugar free for a few years I got used to the taste. I'm not on a diet right now, but I still prefer the taste of Diet Coke or Coke Zero to regular. Regular Coke just tastes wrong to me now.

Semi-unrelated but I was reading a list of death row requested last meals the other day and one dude ordered like a ton of fried chicken, hamburgers, etc. and then a diet coke and I was like...THIS IS YOUR LAST MEAL AND YOU ORDERED DIET COKE.

Because fappies? (fake hippies?) Gluten free is hip and in yall. I don't know. I personally avoid gluten, high carbs, and sugar because it's the only way I've found to make me actually lose weight. These kinda people would frustrate the hell outta me! You can imagine the fun lil circus I have to go through at bars and restaurants.

The whole gluten free thing amazes me.
It's in just about everything. and without gluten, bread is... pretty much a cracker O.o'
I can understand going with the gluten free option if you're actually allergic to it, but if you're not and you're going out of your way to avoid it anyway... why? what's the reasoning there?

Bwah, I worked at a diner place once and a man and his wife came in all nervous and shakey and it turned out he had Celiac disease and had heard that our menu had some gluten free choices.
I was so nervous making his food 'cause I was trying super hard to make sure everything I served him was gluten free and that I didn't add anything that would you know. HARM him. I did it though, I just get nervous now even HEARING about people with celiac disease ;-;

People think there's some benefit to not eating gluten. I mean yeah if you have a gluten intolerance then obviously, and the fad has maybe helped improve the quality of food available to them, but if you don't have a gluten intolerance or some other digestive tract issue that prevents you from dealing with it, there is literally no benefit to it.
:'D how much of this I see EVERY. DAY. Best question I've ever had: "Why can't you just make a gluten-free AND sugar free cheesecake?! You're so stupid!"
Me: "Well ma'am, that would make nasty cheese mush, not cake. If thats what you like then I'd suggest NOT coming to the CHEESECAKE Factory for food."
After working in a restaurant I've lost most of my faith in humanity.

There is a difference between intolerance and allergic. People can be intolerant but have a certain amount of enzyme to digest small amounts. Also the level of reaction varies from person to person.
For example gluten intolerance can just mean bad wind for some while others will have major stomach upsets
And some people are just awkward arseholes!
For example gluten intolerance can just mean bad wind for some while others will have major stomach upsets
And some people are just awkward arseholes!
You know if you're gluten intolerant I can understand but some people are just crazy when it comes to this. We have a repeat customer who buys gluten free pasta all the time because "it's healthier" as she once said. One 32oz bag cost $4 whereas a bag of regular whole wheat pasta is little over $2 and is like 40oz or something -.- Granted if I could I would eat all natural but I'm not willing to dish out $3 for a cup of soup -.-
I wish I could say it's because celiac disease, but it's because being gluten free is becoming a fad. Personally, I've just tried to cut back the amount of gluten that I eat because, holy crap I ate alot.... but I don't make a big deal out of it like some people will. I understand if you do indeed have a disease that requires you to be gluten free, then yes, you do have some rights to be frustrated.
A lot of times... gluten isn't even what's causing problems in people who have personally decided they have a gluten intolerance. Someone did a study that found people still complained of gluten intolerance when given placebos. It was a very high amount... so whatever intolerance they were having was surfacing from a different source.

I know this feeling all to well, I work in a coffee station where we sell the beans that are displayed in huge barrels. they then come up to me and ask "Do you sell coffee?"
my response: -Pokes to the huge display of coffee barrels just two feet behind me- I think we do

I have a wheat intolerance myself, have to avoid mostly the same things gluten-free people have to. It is hilarious the sort of things that have gluten/wheat in them! Twizzlers for one. A couple kinds of juice. Most 'flavored' chips. A lot of instant/microwave food. So I get sometimes it can sort of sneak into an ingredients list where it is unexpected but... bread, cake, beer, cookies, pasta... those ones aren't sneaky! Some people are silly people.
Working for a gym i had to be happy and greet people. We were told to tell the members to enjoy they're workout. 80% of the time i got an 'i hate doing this' many times i wanted to just say 'then don't come' i still can't understand why people waste their time doing something they hate that much. Lol
I'm so glad that I stopped serving tables before the gluten-craze hit.
Unfortunately, now people are constantly asking, "Does this lube/massage oil/body paint/dildo/whatthefuckever have gluten in it?"
To which I have to stare. And shake my head.
What has the gluten-free world COME TO?

I kinda get it. I don't have celaics, but through trial and error, I've discovered that eating most wheat products makes my sinuses swell and gives me stomach cramps. It's less with fermented products like beer and sourdough, and when I go for a gluten-free option, I'm almost guaranteed no reaction. So I try to avoid wheat/gluten products in general. Is it life threatening or debilitating? No. Is it annoying? Yes. But t the same time, when I'm faced with discomfort or a really yummy sandwich, sometimes I just opt for the sandwich.
But yeah, if they make a huge stink about it and then opt for regular food anyway, I can totally see how that would be annoying.

I don't have the full blown disease but I do know that if I eat it I'm in for a rough day or two.
The whole "fad diet" is a bit of a double edged sword, on one hand, it's obviously annoying to anyone dealing with food on the other, it's making the list of places I can go out and eat longer.

I have a celiakia, and one thing I can write: Mostly I don't give a shit, if something has a gluten, or not.
This is an intolerance, not the allergy. So yeah, problems are in the moment, when I'll eat, I don't know, 2 pizza? 8 sandwiches every day?
So I get angry, when I see in the doors in front of bakery: "WE SELL NOW GLUTEN FREE BREAD"! What the fuck... I don't get it...
