Brightness, I BELEIVE is right under 20 Lumens, but I dont have any way of really knowing and thats based on compareing to a 50 lumen flashlight and a 200 lumen flashlight. It throws enough light to dimly, but very navigably light an average livingroom or bedroom, for instance.

Salt is much easier to carve than most other gemstones. It's actually a lot more technical than whipping out a dremel and having at it. Most semi-precious stones are actually rather fragile and prone to fracturing under force. There is also the issue of cost when it comes to finding large enough pieces to put lights in. Generally the larger the piece the more expensive it is.
