(Story by Koviell Sashermasock)
We're in big troubles. Shoenolh is a stronghold. I already read about this place before. Apparently, they were never invaded because their walls are too thick and their army was effective. Now seeing all those dwarven guards looking at us, every single of them armed with a hand cannon; it's quite intimidating. Bishop is scared, Leena stands strong and Arkum doesn't look comfortable here.
They bring us in a room where a dwarven guard confiscates our weapons while another one searches for hidden ones. They also picked our bags.
"You will stay here for now. Commander Harkan will be here soon to ask you some questions. You can sit down while waiting. We will bring you water." Says the Dwarven Guard, in the dwarven tongue.
"How long will we stay here?"
"I have no idea. Don't mess around and we will be easy on you all." Deliver the Dwarven Guard, in the dwarven tongue.
Another dwarf enters the room with a jug of water and a few cups. He leaves them on the table at the side of the room.
"What are they saying?" Asks Arkum.
"A guy is going to ask us questions. Also he said that we're shouldn't mess around."
"Questions? On what?" Demands Leena.
"Probably to know where we're from and what we were doing here." Answer Bishop.
We wait in the room, sitting at the table. We were silent. The guards were silent. After ten minutes or so, another dwarf enters the room. He wasn't wearing the same uniform as the others.
"I'll handle this from there, you can dispose." Tells this other Dwarf.
The Dwarven Guards leave the room, leaving us with this other dwarf. He sits at the table, unbuckle his coat and show us a symbol : it's the multicoloured disk of Io. He might be a worshipper of Io.
"They said that you guys speak the dwarven. Are you comfortable with it?" Demands the Dwarf, in the dwarven tongue.
"Two of us don't understand the dwarven tongue."
"Draconic then. I hope the guards didn't cause you any harm." Says the Dwarf, in the tongue of the dragons.
"They didn't, but they picked our personal gear." Says Leena.
"Are you Commander Harkan?" Request Bishop.
"No, I'm not. He's the one sending me here though. I'm Father Kurd, priest of Io. I didn't expect to see some of you kin here today." States the Dwarf.
"We went in the wrong direction and we got arrested." Delivers Arkum.
"This I know. But why were you there? So far from any of your city-states." Asks Father Kurd.
"We fled Kapazu. The Grey Ones launched a raid during the night. Kapazu was in flames when Arkum and I fled."
"The Grey Ones? Who are they?" Request Father Kurd.
"It's the name we've given them. They're in fact kobolds of Sasswhari." Says Bishop.
"Why would they kill their own kin?" Wonders Father Kurd.
"They don't see themselves as the same kin as us. They see us as inferiors in any means. They invaded many other kobold states, to teach them how to be 'civilised', apparently. Most of them were assimilated, we didn't." Explains Bishop.
"They wanted to put an end to your state because you weren't assimilated?" Demands Father Kurd.
"Exactly." Answers Bishop.
"And you fled Kapazu to go where?" Asks Father Kurd.
"Bishop and I wanted to reach a safe place. Arkum and Soala wanted to reach the Surface. We followed them." Says Leena.
"The Surface? This will be a perilous journey. It's dangerous getting there." State Father Kurd.
"I know, but with the Grey One's Empire is growing, there aren't many places left to go..." States Arkum.
Father Kurd takes some time to think. I look at Bishop, then to Arkum and Leena. We don't say anything. He takes a book and start writing something in it.
"We won't be able to host you for very long. You'll spend the night in a cell. We will bring you warm blankets and food. Tomorrow, I'll give you back your gear and provide additional equipment and a map. Your journey won't be easy, but it can be done." Declares Father Kurd.
"So we will be free to go?"
"Yes, tomorrow. I won't be able to remove the time in detention, but I'm pretty sure spending the night in the cell would be better than sleeping on the ground, at the mercy of whatever creature that might lurk nearby." States Father Kurd.
"We appreciate your help."
"Just reach your goal. If you don't have any questions, we will bring you to your cell." Says Father Kurd.
We remained silent. They bring us to our cell. There are 4 mattresses in it, each one with a blanket. There is a plate of food on each of them. The meal is okay. Bishop is the only one that complains about the taste of the meal; he would probably have cooked something tastier. We sleep for the night.
Tomorrow morning, we're freed. The guards bring to an armoury. Father Kurd was there with another dwarf.
"So you're sure that you want to spend your coins for them?" Asks the Dwarf, in the dwarven tongue.
"They deserve better equipment for a dangerous journey." Answers Father Kurd, in the dwarven tongue.
"Let's see what they're made of. Do they speak our language?" Demands Dwarf, in the dwarven tongue.
"Only two of them. I'll translate if needed." Answers Father Kurd.
They hand us back our bags and weapons. There is another pile of bags at the side of the room.
"I personally made backpacks for your journey. Inside of them there is food, water, general tools and a mess kit. There is a map of the tunnel in this one and a medical kit in that one, if you get wounded. If you need a weapon, pick anything you might need." Tells Father Kurd, in the tongue of dragons.
We receive appropriate equipment to protect ourselves and we get escorted to the stronghold gate. This is our time to leave.
"Good luck on your journey. I hope you'll make it." Says Father Kurd.
"We can't thank you enough for your help."
"I really appreciate the gifts." Expresses Leena.
"We will make good use of the map." States Bishop.
"I hope we will see you again." Tells Arkum.
"I don't think we will, but believe in your dreams and they may come true. Farewell… Friends…" Says Father Kurd.
It is the time to get back on the road. Being held captive by the dwarves ended up not so bad, after all. As we walk in the tunnel we can still see the mighty stronghold, a massive structure standing strong for ages… getting hit by a fiery projectile? And another one, and another one!
"They under attack!"
"We can't stay here!" Yell Leena.
"There is nothing we can do." Says Arkum.
"Run! Quick!" Shout Bishop.
We run away in the tunnels, leaving Shoenolh behind now in flames. Only the Grey Ones would have taken the risk of invading of this stronghold. Will they be pushed away? I don't know. We can be sure that the underground cities will be potential targets to the Empire.
For now, it's the dawn of another day in our Journey to the Surface.
After such a long time, I bring you the end of this act. My writing style kinda changed, so yeah, enjoy the finale :)
