Kalim Ibrahil is the oldest (by about two minutes) son of former Hoenn regional champion Shihab "the Hammer" Ibrahil, a torkoal, and world champion trainer Leila Ibrahil, a ponyta. Kalim and his twin brother Raza were raised in Lavaridge Town, near the fabled hot springs, and trained virtually since birth to carry on the family's long and proud tradition of battling.
The two brothers were close growing up, but not without their rivalries, each developing their own preferences and styles of fighting. Kalim, technically being the eldest (and annoyingly never letting his brother forget it), insisted on leading the charge when the two would go into battle together. As a result he specialized in melee fighting, undergoing extensive training in the martial arts and blending them with his species' potent flame.
A combination of his ability and his family's prestigious name easily landed Kalim and his brother in the Three Regis Combat Academy of Hoenn, where the two intended to train and battle as a two-'mon team. Fully exploiting their identical appearance and diverse fighting styles, the two would keep opponents constantly guessing and did quite well. However they realized quickly that most of the attention at the TRCA was on four 'mon team battles, and to achieve the highest rank and prestige, it would be necessary to fill out their ranks.
The brothers' first recruit was another ponyta, Kristoff Feurhaffe. Although reluctant to add yet another of their type, let alone species, he proved to have the strength, skill, and outgoing attitude that they were looking for, and decided not to let the lack of type diversity sway their decision. Although there were a few candidates to fill out the last position they decided on yet another ponyta, Dawn Evans, partly for the novelty of having an all-ponyta team, but also because they were impressed with her intelligence, tactical skill, and though they won't admit it, her good looks.
This rather odd team did quite well in the academy's team battles, but unfortunately the once-prestigious academy had fallen on hard times. A new administration had taken over after several scandals rocked the school, and it seemed they brought even more scandals and poor decisions with them. Unwilling to have his sons learn from anything but the best, Shihab arranged for them to transfer to the Poke-Combat Academy in Kanto, convincing the parents of their teammates to do the same.
Kalim, leader of the team, is eager to carry on his team's status and make a name for them, though he does find the differences in rules, styles, and battle formats used by the new school somewhat frustrating. Kalim is an outgoing, friendly, and honorable 'mon, though he can be rather opinionated and stubborn about the way things should be done. He is the team leader largely by virtue of his charisma and ability to get others to go along with him, though he leaves most of the tactical and battle-related decision making to Dawn. In a battle Kalim is a highly skilled hand to hand combatant, possessing as much raw skill in that area as many fighting types, with just enough ranged combat ability to keep him from being his team's namesake, a one trick ponyta.
