Silly titles aside, this picture is gorgeous, and everything I could have hoped for. I commissioned it in preparation for Halloween from an artist I knew really liked to draw spooky things, but it was too last-minute on my part to used Halloween as the due date. Despite missing the mark, I really wanted to post it now rather than wait for next Halloween.
I gave the artist a lot of creative control with this piece. My description was literally something along the lines of "Dessy is usually really cute and cuddly, but I would like you to draw him in a way that makes him spooky and scary! There doesn't have to be a background, but if you think it would add a lot to the pic, feel free to draw one and I will be happy to pay for it." Her response was that making cute things scary was one of her favourite things to do, and came out with THIS wip pic literally the very next day:

Needless to say, I was pretty darn surprised and impressed that she was offering me that as the "sketch." She apparently got really into it right off the bat. I almost thought she WAS going to have it done in time for Halloween after that.
The artist I'm referring to is one I found on deviantart:

Happy belated Halloween, guys! <3

And yet, this seems to be the only relatively realistic picture of him (that is, one that looks close to how he might look in real life, e.g. not having those adorable anime eyes).
Sort of curious, which pic of him would you say comes closest to how he'd look in real life?

Yeah, that's understandable. Dessy may be adorable in pictures, but in reality, I'd be terrified of anything that could eat me with its dick, no matter how cute and friendly it is.
Plus, it's hard (though quite possible) to do realism without losing a character's original cute edge; I think that in Hodge's case, he was fairly easy to make realistic since the only things I had to do were add more anatomical detail and redo the nose, eyes, and mouth. Compare his current ref to the one I made back in 2014: the difference is obvious, but I don't think Hodge lost any of his lustre in the process.
For a character like Sonic or Mickey Mouse, it'd be impossible to do them in any non-cartoony way without losing what makes their design work to begin with.
I think in Dessy's case, it'd just be a matter of getting the eyes right, since everything else is already feasible-looking.
