Put under Tutorials because it sort-of is almost maybe.
Anyway.
BAD WINGS MAKE A SID ANGRY. SO VERY ANGRY.
BAD WING TUTORIALS SEND A SID INTO FOAMING FRENZY.

Now, I do NOT mind if people are TRYING to improve their wings. Good for you.
I will however admit I am a complete wing Nazi. WINGS NEED TO LOOK DECENT IN ORDER TO FUNCTION. Even if they're deliberately small and not meant for flight they will still be formed in a manner that suggest they SHOULD be able to work.
Mounds and blankets and lumps of feathery nonsense will send me up the wall.
The same could possibly apply to dragon wings but they're easier to do. You can actually SEE the structure in them.
So yes. Angry Wing Rant Doodle is Angry. And Wingy. And Ranty. And also a Doodle.

I agree wholeheartedly! Whenever I see wings like that I rage pretty good myself; especially if it's done by an already skilled artist. It's like the body and shading and everything is awesome but those wings are TERRIBLE looking! *facepalm*
Oh dear, I seemed to have ranted a little myself. Sorry about that
As for taking an exhorbitant amount of time perfecting wings, I too am guilty of it. You yourself should make a more formal tutorial for the types that can't grasp proper wing structure, you know. You're damn good at them.

>_< My problem is that I can't imagine how big/small to make the wings in proportion to the character. And then adding angles. I gave up on one of my recent wing pictures and just went with something that ended up looking pretty crappy.
One of these days I just need to spend time figuring out how to do them at least semi-right. D:

Size of the wings isn't something I'd really worry about if you're getting a character that's quite large. Then, to be practical, the wings'd need to be rediculously HUGE and impractical. So I just say go with what's aesthetically pleasing but still somewhat believable.
If you'd like I can scan pages out of my bird book to help. It won't be a perfect solution but it shows you how to make a paper model bird to use for a wing guide :D

Ack, I sounded like an asshole when I said that. I'M SORRY. ><
I need to spend more time on my wings, the way you do. I generally go the more stylized route (unlike when I was still in highschool; I'd spend HOURS on wings), simply because I'm usually trying to not have all the viewer's attention drawn towards the wings.

Moulting birds generally only lose one primary at a time, and only in pairs (they couldn't fly, otherwise.). I've got a nice collection of feathers that various birds have dropped here--black vulture and red-tailed hawk, mostly. They're pretty tattered around the edges, so you can really see why moulting is crucial. I bet it's like getting an engine overhaul when the new feathers come in. But grackles pretty much lose their whole glorious tail at once, and boy do they look silly.
....I blame anime >.=.> They have some of the most used - and anatomically WRONG - wings. I can't count how many people try to use that style, even though it tends to look like feathers dangling from stick, or someone covered their arm in glue and stuck it in a vat of feathers.
I know the anatomy though, just have no luck drawing realistic feathers -.=.-

lol. I agree that most don't draw wings accurately. But I guess it comes down to what you are going for... like when I do semi realism I go for the real wings, but the rest of the time I just make the more... fake looking wings. My own wing tattoos that I designed, I used real wings to reference so that they were more real. but anyway. yeah, wings are fun.
